Sorry I haven't had experience with the hay problem.

I am really glad she's doing fine and too bad Mum was like that.

I heard from someone about her friend who had mini mare that never raised any foal she had.

She always found a way to kick and kill her babies.

Not sure how many but know it was more than one.

I also knew someone who had a maiden mare who would not allow her first foal to nurse and it died.

He bred her for the next year and she was fine with that baby.

I don't remember our little guy doing the hay thing. Are you keeping her in the barn or the house? You might try keeping inside -- at least at night -- for her first couple of weeks. We had Jeffie in with us for the first few nights and he wore Depends panties. After awhile he got so active we let him be in the barn with another baby and her mom........but it meant trudging out to feed all night long. Thank heaven there were two of us to take turns.
