Preparing alfalfa cubes

I know they need to be soaked before feeding them but I was wondering if they also need to be broken up? So far I break them apart completely while they are dry then I add water to wet it all down. If I break them apart completely do I not need to moisten them? Thanks.

The cubes that will break apart easily, into rather small pieces, I will feed dry; those that are rather hard and barely break apart I soak. I have 3 horses that get a few crumbled cubes in their meals, and one also gets soaked once daily.
