Dear Fellow Horse Owners:

Did you know that there is a bill in the NH House that, if passed into law, will require us all to license and vaccinate (rabies) every horse we own on an annual basis? As if horse ownership doesn’t already present enough financial challenges these days, who needs this additional “tax”?

Below is the text of the bill so you can read it for yourself. Also, at the end of the text is a box which shows the status of the bill, which currently is slated for its first hearing on Tuesday, January 27th at 1:45 p.m. at the Legislative Office Building in Concord.

My experience is that sometimes these hearings get changed at the last minute, and I can’t guarantee that I will know ahead of time to save you a wasted trip to Concord. The best thing you can do is get familiar with the General Court website and keep track of its progress on your own. Go to http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/bill_statu...ick_search.html and type in hb 0427 and that should do the trick. You can find out who is on the committee that will hear the testimony at http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/house/comm...committees.aspx. You can find out who your representatives are at http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/house/memb...usemembers.html.

Please try to attend the hearing and let our legislators know what you think of this tax on our equines. Bring your friends and neighbors, too! We can let these legislators know that the horse industry in NH is not sleeping “on the job” and that we are aware of this effort to generate new revenue from us. Even if you do not want to testify, you can sign in with your name and indicate whether you are in favor of or opposed to the proposed bill. It’s important to get a strong voice out NOW so that we can kill this bill in committee. If you can’t attend, then please, by all means, contact your representatives and let them know what you think of this bill.
