My mare that I desperately want a baby out of was bred the last week of June. On 8/3 she had an ultrasound and confirmed 35 days. This is a 17 yr old mare that has only had 2 babies. The Vet did a full work up on her and said there is nothing physically wrong with her to prevent her from carrying to full term. He ran labs and her progesterone was low so we started her on Regumate. She has been on the Regumate ever since.

My question is how do I know if she is still pregnant? I haven't had time to look up how the test works and wondered if you guys would know if a Pregnamare test would tell me if she IS still pregnant, even though she is on the Regumate? My Vet wants to re-check her Progesterone at 150 days but what about till then? I want to know if I am giving the Regumate for a good reason or if I am giving it to her for nothing?

Thanks

Regumate does not show up on progesterone tests

So P4 tests are still accurate. Its one of the wonderful things about Regumate

Definately keep up on it until the vet says to stop

Just from personal experience here, I would definitely keep your mare on Regumate right up until she foals. Once we put them on it, unless it's determined that they are no longer in foal, we don't take them off until there is a baby on the ground!

Good luck with your mare and I'm looking forward to seeing those foal pics next year!

So if I ordered a Pregnamare test and it was negative, I should keep giving the Regumate to her anyway? I guess I could always have the Vet ultrasound her again.....

This bottle of Regumate leaks when I tip it to get some out in the syringe. :new_shocked: Do you think if I take some cardboard or something and cut it to fit the lid with a little hole it maybe wouldn't do that? It makes such a mess let alone spilling out $$, if you know what I mean!

Do you have one of the covers with the syringe tip built in? I've never had one leak before... maybe try to get a new cover?

Definately keep her on Regumate. What does the pregnancy test test for? Progesterone? You KNOW that that's low already, its why you have her on Regumate in the first place

You are wearing latex gloves when you handle the regumate, right?

I have just put mine in a littlle fruit jar and then refill as I need it. That way I don't have to use a needle or

does it get spilled.

That's why I was asking if the Pregnamare test would show if she IS still pregnant, even though she is on Regumate. So, are you saying the Pregnamare test won't be able to tell me, that if I really want to know, I should have her ultrasounded?

Thanks again! :bgrin

I do not know what Pregnamare tests for, so I can't answer that question. Regumate will NOT show up on a test that looks for progesterone, making it ideal for many situations. You can test a mare over and over and the number you get is what SHE is producing. Then, if her levels are low, you can suppliment with Regumate without making future tests invalid. Ie if you gave her regumate, then tested her, and it showed up as being enough to keep the pregnancy, you have to ask the question is SHE producing that much, or does she need the regumate? Luckily you don't have to ask that question, since it will not show up. So if you test and she has, say, 8 ng/ml, then you can discuss taking her off the medicine. If she still tests low, say, 2 ng/ml, you know she's in danger of loosing the pregnancy if you take her off the supplimental progesterone.

So doing a progesterone test will tell you what the MARE is producing. If you do a pregnancy test that only looks at progesterone, it may very well show her as being not pregnant. But she's on Regumate, so her pregnancy, if she has one, is being maintained by the suppliment.

Basically what I'm saying is a progesterone test for pregnancy will be useless in this situation.

Wow, what a great explanation. I have been wondering myself since I have a mare on it and she tested low normal before we put her on it. Now I know I can test her and see what she is really producing without taking her off of it.

Oh, ok, I see what you are saying. :aktion033: That is really cool that it test for what the mare is actually producing herself. I was wondering how that would help the Vet to know if we should take her off at that time. Now I get it! Thank you.

So I looked up what the Pregnamare test for and it said PMSG (Pregnant Mare Scrum Gonadotropin). Do you what that means and if it is related to Progesterone?

Thanks again VERY MUCH in trying to figure this out

EXACTLY Tami

That's what I was trying to say, but I don't think I did so well the first time around

PMS-G is the old name of eCG (equine chorionic gonadotropin), and no, its not related to progesterone. If I remember correctly (and I'm rather vague on this part... I'm a stallion specialist

) the embryo produces eCG to tell the mare that she's pregnant. You probably know as much as me by reading the box the test came in

I'd have to look it up to refresh my memory before I said something completely wrong as to why you may be getting a negative test result. I'd definately consider having another ultrasound done like you mentioned earlier.

Wow, this all is VERY intresting! I was a Vet Tech for small animals for over 15 yrs but it seems the large animal pratice is much more intresting! I should go back to working for a Vet, that does Large animals and learn all this stuff. That would be so cool! (just doesn't pay the bills though, darn  )
