I usually check my colts at birth because they are usually both there...then they disappear for a while. I have had them drop as yearlings or early in their 2 year old year- just depends on the horse. Had one that only had one down during the winter of his yearling year.... worried me a bit but as soon as the weather warmed up- VOILA!- there they both were just fine. Dont worry, you will likely see them sometime this next year.

In regards to gelding early and the horses being bigger and not so studly looking- I know this has been found to be true in the full sized horses but dont know how much it effects the Minis. They would not develope the 'studly jaws' and other attributes though if they are gelded early.
