I've been noticing that one of the horse's tails is looking a little

thin lately, so I ordered one of those tail braids where you

encase the three sections in fleece and braid the sections. I really like it,

however I do have a couple questions for those of you that use them.

After I braid the sections, the "fringe" on the end drags on the ground, so

I ended up cutting it off, which defeats the purpose of having the fringe.

The instructions say something about looping the tail up, but if I do that

won't it be dangerous in the case another horse gets a foot caught in it?

Or am I not reading how to do it right?

Also, what about winter? Do you use these things year round? Seems

like it would get full of ice and snow?

I put it in two weeks ago, and have taken it out each week, washed the

tail, combed it through with mane and tail and rebraided.

I'm thinking about ordering several more of these wraps but would like to

really decide this is the way to go before I spend more money on them.

Thanks for any advice.

In regards to looping it back up...

What my barn does for braiding up hair is the excessive use of electrical tape. Electrical tape is wonderful for finishing off braided hair... it comes off easily and won't stick to the hair, but stays on better and damages hair much less than rubber bands.

That said, the people here in my barn have Andalusians, and if they need to loop the tail back up they use electrical tape to hold it up. It's not super strong and will break if anything gets caught in it. If you're afraid of having another horse get caught in it (our horses aren't out with others unattended) you can wrap the whole thing in vetwrap, which will also protect it from ice and such I'd imagine?

Most people leave tails up year round, I do.
