I wanted to clip the horses before the shipper comes to get them and I also wanted to take a few pictures of me riding Velvet across the street at the pond before we left. Well, Velvet was being a total PITA and so I put her in the round pen to run off some of her energy. She did about 3 laps before I heard a very loud “CRACKâ€. Velvet was continuing to gallop, but on 3 legs. Her right hind leg was in the sir as high as it could go. Although I was trying to get her to stop and was being very quiet and calm, Velvet still did several laps before she came to a stop. Her leg swelled up immediately and was hot right away also. I got her out of the round pen and tied her up. Called the vet and started to cry. I had broken Velvet’s leg and we are moving to Washington State in 10 days!! Within 20 minutes the vet was there. She palpated and said nothing was broken. I had been cold hosing her also and she started bearing weight in it already. The vet took several x-rays and gave me wrapping instructions as well as bute. Getting the x-rays was hard because Velvet kept picking her foot up if the film cartridge touched her.
So, the vet finally called and said she has a crack in her fetlock, torn tendon and suspension ligament also. She will be ok to ship, but her racing and jumping career is over. Since she was never a race horse and hates jumping, I guess that will not be a problem. We already called the shipper and they will change her polo wraps at the lay over barn if I leave instructions. She has to be kept wrapped up snug though.
Added stress is just what I need right now. We are moving 3000 miles next week, my 87 y/o grandpa is in the hospital with pneumonia and now my horse has a busted leg. Who wants to trade places with me for a while?
