Thanks for posting these Mary. There were many mares that were definately a bargain price if I had room for more. As each one came in, I thought, "I have mares as good or better that I am willing to part with."

There was one homozygous yearling filly with blue eyes that I thought was particularly outstanding. She was no saled, so I still have a chance at her if I reduce my numbers here.

That's horrible!

And way too scary!

And you wonder why I'm not breeding any mares this year?

I haven't sold the awesome ones I already foaled and I'll be dad gum if I give them away like that!!!!!!!!!!

And high rollars at the Heritage Sale were bidding what, $80,000?????????

What on earth is going on???????

little king did still set a record on that colt for 101,000.00

also pls dont flame me but i have always heard that the high hope auction is known for low prices but thats just what i have heard

I will say the market is down. But every market is down right now. real estate, car sales, horses you name it its down right now.

So i agree in a down market you breed less or you hold onto the ones you have and wait the market out and sell when prices go back up.

The thing is the market will come back and will come back quicker if we all get smart and dont give horses away and breed less.

Just like the housing market its supply and demand. Right now its a buyers market in real estate and horses. But I have seen this cycle over and over and what goes down does go back up

I know im the eternal optimist

I agree with KayKay (hope springs eternal

: ) but how can those folks afford to take the horses to the auction in the first place and even break even with gas food and lodging being what it is??

I have to agree with slow down on the breeding, hang on to what you got till the market goes back up

I also think that If and when I start breeding again, everything produced that is male,(unless it is spectacular and his personality is stellar as well :bgrin) will be gelded.

( although I had always gelded a majority of my colts even back in the late 80's early 90's.

What goes down must come up

I know every market has its ups and downs, but what scares me is that the sellers took these prices. Regardless of whether or not the sale has a reputation for low prices, these are SUPER LOW prices for the quality of some of these horses. Los Arboles Kool Skip is a two-time World Top Ten and Honor Roll Top Ten, and the Wind Flight mare is a half sister to Santa Fe. We've only had one stallion for sale for the last couple years, but we'll keep him as long as we have to to get him the home he deserves. What's going on that people are selling at these prices??

Those prices are SAD. I have said it in the past and I'll say it again, if everyone who breeds would cut back or even skip a year or two of breeding, and be firm with your prices, (so be prepared to keep your foals for awhile
default_wub.png
: )it sure would help alot with the mini market. I didnt re-bred anyone last year, and this year I am only breeding a few mares that I already have buyers for there foals. I would rather not breed then give my foals away. Corinne

What's going on that people are selling at these prices??
Not trying to justify or condem, but there are a variety of reasons. SOME people have limited space and are in a position where they have to sell something. Prices were very low, but better than I have seen at some all breed/unregistered sales. Some are dispersing for health or economic reasons. Some are taking some of what they have to show off their breeding program and hope to entice others to their farm. Some got into Miniatures on a whim and the kids/grandkids lost interest and they just want to get out and have no idea of how to market.

All that said, I'm glad I didn't take anything there to sell this Spring. I saw some nice horses sell for what I considered cheap, but didn't buy because I also have some nice horses for sale and am limited on room.

I dont know about everywhere in the US but here in Florida and several other areas of the US there is a major hay shortage and or drought. Some folks may not even be able to get hay to feed their horses and that may be why some are selling so low. It had gotten so bad around here that if any of my friends found hay available we would all call each other and converge on the place to buy all the hay we could carry. So that could certainly be part of the problem.

The Heritage sale will get high prices for a while longer because of who they are and the consistent quality of the stock they breed and (and I do believe this has a lot to do with it) the magnificent way they are present4ed displayed and marketed.

I am not knocking the Heritage sale and I do believe a horse is worth exactly what you get for it but there is NO way I would pay that sort of money for a colt and no way either that that colt will ever make that money again- I think people with a bit too much money just get carried away, sometimes.

And I also believe the general market is depleted because the average Mini buyer cannot tell a good horse from a mediocre one and so sees no reason to pay $5,000.00 for a foal when they can get one down the road for $500.00- or even in some cases $50.00.

There seems to be no way round this problem- it is certainly the same in dogs and cats- we seem to have a market with a huge gap right in the middle where good, average horses should be selling for good average prices and are not doing so- there are either over priced, supposedly and hopefully, top of the line animals being sold for inflated prices (and that harms my market as much as deflated prices) or animals going through markets for peanuts!!

i have to disagree about the colt. I think if his owners stay loyal to him and market and promote him the right way he could pay his cost back and then some. Obviously if they can afford that kind of colt they can afford to promote him. And he has to prove himself in the show ring and I do think he will do outstanding on the show circuit. So when he gets done showing and they pair him up with the right mares yeah I think heck pay that price back

I only own one mare that has buckeroo breeding. But I know many farms that say they got where they are by investing in buckeroo stock.

Now little old me will never have that kind of money to buy a horse but it is an investment in the future of your farm.

I am an eternal optimist too!

Sad the prices at High Hope but I believe this is typical for them this time of year and should not be used to compare quality/prices of other sales and horses. A well bred, quality horse is still a valuable asset to anyones breeding program and the market overall.

I was at the sale...and didn't buy anything...same reasons mentioned by others. I don't have room for more until I sell something. I am glad to hear others feel that sale is not a good measure of the market. My husband went with me and it was his first mini sale :new_shocked: It was a bad move on my part to have him with me
default_sad.png
he now is talking pulling in the reins on my plans to improve my program because he is afraid I will be wasting our money. OH Boy am I going to have to do a lot of talking now

I think those priced reflect the over breeding of miniature horses by people who thought mediocre minis would still make them a lot of money. All we have to do is look at the sales boards to see there are hundreds of minis to be sold and not enough buyers. Chances are, most of the minis sold at those auctions will be used for breeding because that is what most minis are used for. I am always amazed at peole who continue to breed even when there isn't a good market .

I too agree the colt that sold at the Heritage Sale will stand a good chance of making money for the new owner. There are people who want the best, have the money for the best, and pay for the best. If I were rich I wouldn't mind having that piece of eye candy in my pasture. It is wonderful to see that a Buckaroo son can be sought after by a breeder who does want the best. For the price to get that high, it took more than the one bidder! I say CONGRATULATIONS to the Rogers. On the other hand, some of the prices of others sold do say that prices are down even for exceptional minis. Mary
