PLEASE GIVE YOUR "OPINIONS" ON WHAT A FUTURITY SHOULD/SHOULD NOT BE LIKE? MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THERE IS STALLION AND MARE NOMINATIONS, PAYBACKS, ETC. ARE THERE/ SHOULD THERE BE "OPEN" (NON-FUTURITY ) CLASSES IN FUTURITIES? HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT DIFFERENT ONES AND THERE ARE SOME THAT ARE A LITTLE CONFUSING AS TO WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO "PROMOTE" THEIR STALLIONS, MARES, BABIES, BREEDING, FARMS, ETC. JUST THOUGHT I'D GET SOME OPINIONS. THANKS

A futurity is a program where the sire and dam are nominated before the foal is born. The foal is shown, usually until age 3, in restricted classes. Only those foals who's parents were nominated can be entered. Paybacks are paid to the owner of the foal.

There would not be "open" futurity classes, but those horses can certainly show in open classes.

In some breeds (not miniature) you can post nominate the foal, which means after the foal is born you can pay extra fees to show in the futurities.

There are also "sweepstakes", where again the mare and sire are nominated before the foal is born, and then the payback goes to the owner of the mare and the owner of the stallion.
