Wanted to share a fun idea my husband came up with. Our pastures aren't growing right now and we give our animals an afternoon snack and game break. Both our horses and donkey look forward to their afternoon game and wait in front of the barn at noon looking for my husband. We take several trash cans, plastic cans with snap on lids, and big water buckets and put a small amount of hay in them. We put two buckets together with just a touch of hay poking out and a touch poking under the lid of the cans. The "guys" love rolling the cans around and pulling on the lids to get to the hay. They even use their hoofs to paw lids off and pull buckets apart. The first few times we bearly put the lids on or pushed the buckets together and now we push and snap on tight, their pros. Some days, when we have time, we "hide" hay under buckets, behind stumps, in the barn and such for them to find. Helps with boredom at this time of the year too. P.J. is a champ at this game, the donkey, and we can hide hay just for him in the places the girls can't go or don't think to look. He's the small guy.
One of our horses is amazing at unsnapping the trash can lids.
