EAR PROBLEM

I recently noticed a problem on the ear of one of my geldings. The hair on the very edge of his one ear, almost the whole way around, is gone and the ear edge seems to be a little thickened. I've never seen this before - any experiences with this? Could it be fungal, or something else? Thanks in advance!

there is an ear fungus caused by flies landing in the ears. but i cant remember the name. but usually you see it as little spots inside the ear. almost look like little mushrooms.
