This is Cocoa's Dad (son of two buckskins) Cocoa is the second horse I posted a picture of. He had 9 foals 8 fillies and 1 colt appears to be all colors of the rainbow. Chestnut, smokey black, chestnut pinto.

I can sure see where this genetics thing can become a great fascination. Now I am itching to get my girls done too. I am also figuring that at some point you can acurately tell the genetics of a foal by knowing genetic history of the parents. Big Fun!

It is pretty addicting!

And yes, once you have the building blocks down you can predict what color foals are possible from various crosses. That said, I never expect to get the color I have the largest chance of because with my luck I get the one there is a 6.25% or less chance of every time! LOL!

The test results are in!

Cocoa - the stallion that actually looks "black" is E/e a/a Cream N/N so would be considered a black.

Miracle - the gelding is E/E a/a Cream N/Cr so definitely a smokey black.

I talked to the breeder and she believes that their dam, even though her papers (and hence the boys) say she is sorrel was a silver bay. She has since been sold so they can't test her.

Now I am wondering if I should of had some other color test run. (Silver or Champagne). Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Either way I think I will pay the fees to have their papers changed to correctly reflect their color now that I know what it is.

Nope, you're good on testing! If they had silver, then they would be silver black/silver smokey black, and they definitely aren't. Not champagne either. You are good to go-beautiful black and smokey black boys

The dam has to be silver bay though because the gelding is homozygous for black which means that she has to be black based.

Here is what the gelding would like if he had silver: http://www.smallsalesaustralia.com/minipalette/silvercream.php

And what the stallion would like if he had silver (the pictures on the top right and left, not middle): http://www.mustangs4us.com/Horse%20Colors/z_silver_dapples.htm

Here is what the stallion would look like with champagne: http://www.ichregistry.com/classic.htm

And the gelding with champagne (in the middle, called Classic Cream): http://www.ichregistry.com/cream.htm

Hope this helps!

BTW I just wanted to chime in......it looks like Miracles Dad in post #23 is a grullo to me with a dorsal not a brown. I'm no expert so maybe someone else with chime in?

Well we know his son is the smokey black and that he got it from the sire. The picture is not a good one to judge color from-the darker shoulder looks like it is due to sweat and I can't tell if there is a dorsal. I bet he is either smutty buckskin or smokey black.
