The guy in avatar is a silver/black dapple. His mane was pure white but is starting to have the body color (?grey) in it. His dam is a silver pinto (hard to tell some pictures the "silver" looks like that mousey color and others it looks grey) white mane and tail. The sire is a black and white pinto.

My stallion has bred 2 mares. One a red roan ?possible silver or just chestnut (white mane and tail) had a colt just like her. The other a black or very dark bay (because she does bleach out dark brown in the sun) had a silver dapple just like the sire.

Question: What color would/should I breed him to if I'm looking for a black and white? Is the best bet (or only good choice) a homozygous black?

Your best bet would probably be to breed to a homozygous black, although since he is silver; half those foals could still be silver black.

I have a silver bay filly that is homozygous black plus one agouti and at least one silver (no silver test available when I tested her; we thought she was palomino  ). So, even though she is homozygous black, she could still pass on her agouti or her silver gene too.

Sandee, keep in mind that bays can be homozgyous black too. If you want to try for a black horse, you'll need to breed to a black horse that is homozgyous for black to better your chances. Like Chanda said, there is a chance for silver due to your stallion's color.

I'd say yes, breed to a mare that is homozygous for black, and also homozygous for pinto. Then you have a 50% chance of getting the black and white you are looking for.

And if you find a source of really nice black and white pinto mares, homogygous for both black and pinto, could you post the source on the forum? I am sure that lots of us would love to have one or more!!!!

I just sold one and she's heading overseas.

I have her yearling daughter here. Homozygous for tobiano and likely homozygous for black too.

I agree with the others. Breed to homozygous black mares and homozygous for tobiano too for your best shot at black pinto foals.
