I always had trouble figuring out if a horse was a dun or a buckskin  and heard many different things from different people that told me how to distinguish between the two, asome of them contradicting. Well I came across this article somehow today so I thought I would share it for those of you that had trouble like me.

Enjoy

In fact there is often no difference visually between a Bay Dun and a Buckskin- the rules about dorsal stripes are not absolute- a Buckskin can have a dorsal but a Dun must have one.

And then of course, to totally confuse you a horse can be Buckskin AND Dun- the two are not exclusive!!

Anything with a Cream "gene" can be tested, but, since there is no test for Dun as yet (soon to follow, hopefully) a horse with Agouti Black and Cream is obviously a Buckskin but may also be a Dun!!

Interesting articles. Still "clear as mud" for me! I thought okay-dorsal stripe=dun, no dorsal stripe=buckskin...then I read the second article with pics of smutty buckskins.....with the dorsal stripe! Only they call it something else, and then they said to be a true dun had to have the leg markings. I think I'll still leave it up to the "experts". :bgrin

"True " Duns do not have to have leg barrings.

Buckskins CAN have real dorsal stripes- now, whether or not these Buckskins will turn out to be also Dun will have to wait for the test!!
