Could you all please post pics (if you have any) of your mares "bagged up" and close to foaling. I have one due in two weeks and she has not bagged up at all. Not that I can see/feel. Maybe it is hardly noticeable or can you really tell when they are full of milk. I have the foaling alarm on but am wondering if I a a little premature.

If you click on the Foaling Signs link below in my signature you will find photos and other info too!

But also remember a mare can foal with no milk, and have milk by the time the foal is up on it's feet! Or if the mare has had fescue they can have no milk/udder development also.

I went back through my photos, here is Star in 2005 about 10 hrs prior to foaling:

That's the only one I have, I didn't take pics of the three this year like I should have for record/knowing sake. I know that my silver bay mare didn't make a big udder, her teats filled out but she didn't have the bag like Star above until after she foaled and her filly started to nurse. Star is really good about having a big udder, usually gets very warm and tight within 12 hours of foaling.. Lacey my appy mare looked like a flipping holstein cow for two weeks before foaling!

Is your mare a maiden or only had a foal or two? I know the younger mares often tend to be the ones that 'hold' their bag/milk until very close to foaling or drop afterwards..

Kim thanks so much for the great pics and links. What I want to know is this mare is not a maiden she has had one foal but I cannot get any milk from her at all and her udder is not at all full like in the pics. God imagine if shes just FAT!!!!

this is ghost, i believe she was a maiden.

udder around a week or so from foaling.

she was pretty late in foaling, she had a little bag (bigger than normal, but not full) for several weeks....foaled with no other signs, hard croup, tight ....you know.

oh heck here's some more.

Well she may not bag up yet, you said she's two weeks away approximately? Have you double checked breeding dates? Is this the first time you've foaled her, or did you foal her out before? If so, did you keep record of bag changes with the first foaling? Can you get some photos of her to share? Sorry for the 50 questions lol, she may just be the type of mare to wait until closer to foaling to actually bag, heck you may go out one day, she have a huge udder and drop the foal a few hours later, or she could just wait until after she foals after the oxytocin has really kicked in (oxytocin is a hormone that stimulates contractions and milk let down for those who didn't know)

Here is a pic of a maiden mare the day before she foaled about 24 hours actually. I know every horse is different here why she did drip and wax the teats were not really all that full and at some points in the last 24 hours were still pointing inwards at eachother

The one thing I know for sure is no matter how sure you think you might be.. these mares will prove you wrong.

Hmm I think the breeding dates may be incorrect beacuse I have just been out to see a friends mare who is due this week and she has HEAPS of milk and looks soooo huge compared to my mare!
