Jenn, just how much more peaceful than a tiny Scottish village do you think you are likely to get??

This is an International Disease.

And homeschooling I do not think, is an answer as you would obviously end up with people even less well socialised than they are at present, and, IMO bad socialisation and poor interactive skills are most of the problem.

What to do? Homeschool your kids, or move to small-town Canada where people seem to MUCH less homicidal, and the only people who have guns are those that really need to have them (farmers, hunters).

We get the occasional crazy up here, but nothing like down in the states. Between the nut jobs and the expensive education and health care, I don't know why anyone still lives there!
One thing I learned is to never say never many people including the amish yesterday would have NEVER thought it would happen there NO PLACE IS IMMUNE just like no class is immnue no race is immune

Kids need to be social to learn how to become part of society and keeping them home 24/7 sure wont solve any problems IMO

The way my luck runs,,,,,,,the day I started homeschool, someone would break into my house.

I don't think it's the answer either. I think it would take a lot of things to come together to get the problem under control and unfortunately that would also take a very long period of time.

I say we go back to Little House On the Praired,,,,,,,,I'd sure feel better.

Homeschooling isn't what some people think it is....such as it makes unsocialized kids!! My goodness, I have seen many children who have been home schooled and they are very social. Many parents of homeschool kids really are on the ball as making sure their children do interact with other children. Kids that want to play sports are put into sports, kids who want to be in 4H are in 4 H, kids who want to join horse classes are put into them, you would be amazed at how well these kids do with other kids and adults...parents can be very proud of them....plus the parents have a say of what their children are exposed to that are not appropriate for kids. Don't believe that homeschool kids are at home day in and day out without being socialized because they are socialized . Many trips are planned for them with other kids who are homeschooled and I know of them taking trips to State Capitols to learn about how their government is supposed to work, they attend concerts, fairs and many many other affairs that public school kids attend. Parents really have to care to make it work but I have seen how it works very well. We all know that social misfits come out of public schools....we see it all the time!. JMHO Mary

Yes, I realise that BUT if you take them to 4H you stand the risk of them being shot- if you take them to MacDonald's you stand that risk- well, you do if you live in London, anyway.

If you take them anywhere you take a risk.

Don't fly, the plane may crash, don't cross the road, either.

I realise Schools are meant to be different, and I really do believe if a child has a right to be safe (and they do have that right) it should be in School, and we should do everything that we can to make sure they are.

But, then, I know only too well that, in what I believe you would call High School- what we call Secondary School, in inner cities, at least, the main risk to the Teachers is from the pupils and the same goes fro other pupils, too.

That is what I meant about kids not always having the proper socialization even in public schools....they still do horrible things to other students and even teachers. As far as no place being entirely safe for anyone, that is so true but there is less chance in being harmed in certain places and more so in others. I think kids are safer from being shot in 4H classes than schools, but that is just my opinion. Yes even at home an airplane can fall on them but or they could be shot but not as likely to happen, as being harmed in public schools. My point is, we all take risks in going anywhere but we can lessen our risks by keeping out of known places for harm. I will say my concern is for the children because they aren't making it a choice to go to public schools, our laws demand they go[ unless we can afford private schools] ...as for teachers they are making the choice each and every day to be there, as they made the choice to become teachers, knowing the problems they can encounter with children.
