The pregnancy is an extreme long shot. From the person we got them from says no, but a few house's down there is another mini or Shetland. It's a complete unknown. When we picked them up we were told they were only 5 and 3 years old only to find out the true ages are 12-15 years old for the...
Now both replies have me thinking. I do know who the original owner is and both my mini's I took in were told to me as mini-horse's. I'm learning as fast as I can about them since I keep goats as well and its been interesting in seeing them both curious of each other.
But since having these...
My first mini's were procured recently this year and I fell in love with them. Misty if around 12 to 15 years of age and Rainey (her daughter) is 5 years of age.
I was suggested to purchase a waterproof blanket for my mini's seeing they prefer to be outside mostly.
Looking online I found I needed to know what size to order, so how do you measure a mini-horse especially if your not sure how much they weigh.

I don't know if this topic has ever been asked and I thought it would be interesting to find out some old time methods of caring for horses.
A few years ago I talked with a woman who told me her grandfather in Texas used to give her horse a cigarette once a month to deworm him. She told him...
Thank You everyone for your wonderful insights to feeding mini's. It gives me much more than what I found on the internet.
The veggies I posted here were from a site that had safe and unsafe veggies and fruits for horses so I used that as an example.
Always looking forward to others who feed...
Since getting my girls I have been given a lot of different advise from "BEWARE OF FOUNDERING". Among the advise is to only feed one flake of hay for the two mares I have and be careful of fresh grass's and not to let them get too much.
I know buttercups are not good for horses and I even...
That was the farrier's first impression too. But I checked with the past owner about her being with a stallion and she was emphatic that she has not been with a stallion.
Makes you wonder though, doesn't it.

After your posting Susanne you may not agree with this but the farrier suggested to drop both girls down to 2 flakes of hay per day, keep handling them especially their hooves, legs and backs to get them more used to handling. He has a herd of 10+ mini's and that's what he feeds.

I'm inclined to agree with Rainey having a hay belly. I have a big alpine goat who develops a hay belly over winter and usually takes him almost all summer to lose it.
We were able to procure the services of a good and patient farrier who came over and did their hooves. Rainey though gave us...
Thanks so much for the nice welcoming post Val and your email Amy, it was a real eye opener.
Rainey: The Daughter, think she looks a little fat?
Misty: The Mom

WOW! They look great. The girls now live in Wells, Maine so we're not too far from you. We are closer to Sanford and North Berwick.
When we got them in Rainey was a little brat (she still is and knows how to break out of fences). Now the roles seem to be reversed a little with Misty being...
Hello from Maine -
About a month ago my wife and I were approached to help a woman who became very ill and could no longer care for her mini's and was unable to find another person to take them.
We raise a dairy line of goats and had no experience in horse's. We talked about it and went on...
