When breeding your stallion to an outside mare what is customary, the stud fee to be paid upon service or to be paid when mare is vet checked in foal?

Either. Most large stud fees are paid part in advance, part upon pregnancy confirmation, or sometimes remainder at foaling. I personally charge 100% before. It really depends on what YOU want, and what you can convince the mare owner is a good idea.

There is no set rule. Just make SURE you have an airtight breeding contract outlining all services offered and all guarentees.

We've bred a few mares to our stallion Omega. When we did we requested half down when the mare was dropped off & the other half when the mare was picked up.

Most that I've looked at "on-line" require a deposit or booking fee "upfront" and that gets deducted from the stud fee which is due before the mare leaves the propery. You want to spell out exactly what you offer as to mare care and the charges and what your guarantees are (such as live birth and rebreeding).

Are you offering a live foal guarantee? if so - what is your definition of live foal (stands and nurses is one definition).

Some people have a non-refundable "booking fee" and then on top of that a "stud fee" - the booking fee is paid when the contract is signed (like making a reservation) - Some people have the stud fee due prior to the mare being bred - others have it due on some date like "september 1st" where you pay it in full or send a vet certified "barren certificate" (e.g. the mare is not pregnant).

Even others have the stud fee to be paid in full prior to your receipt of a stallion service certificate. (e.g. you don't get to register the foal unless you have paid the stud fee in full)

Lots of options.
