What is the average age a Shetland is thru growing at?

thanks in advance.

Can be anywhere from age 2 - 5. Our rules state we do not bring them permanent on papers until age 5.

Personal experience, I have to bloodlines, one keeps growing until age 3, on stops at 18 months.

Hi Sandra,

Unlike the Miniature horses where their papers are temporary until they turn three years old, a Shetland's papers are already permanent when they are issued.

A Shetland will obtain a permanent height measurement card when they are (6) six years old (page 98 of the 2008 Rulebook) and jus like the Miniatures do once they obtain their permanent height card at (3) three years of age, Shetland ponies must be measured at the first show of the season and have a heel measurement taken as well. At the time of the first show to validate the permanent height card the show steward must see the Shetland, the registration papers and have the permanent card so that they can record the heights/heel for that year along with the Stewards initials and measuring stick number on the back of the card.

Please refer to pp 98/99 of 2008 rulebook .... part 2, Item A, #2.

Ponies that have received their permanent measurement card, must have their HEEL measurement taken each new year. Unlike Miniatures, Shetlands w/ permanent card do NOT have to have the HEIGHT measurement verified at the start of the show season ... the ONLY new measurement required for a pony w/ a permanent card is HEEL (not height). That's a long, long, long, long-time rule and has only varied the silly year we measured every pony at every show.

Again ... ponies w/ a permanent card do NOT need a height measurement at the beginning of the season but do need a heel measurement. A pony w/ a permanent measurement card should have its heel checked every 60 days. You also will have to be measured at Congress if you go there to show.
