I really need some prayers right now. I am so angry with myself....i've screwed up and now Honey and Misty may have to pay for my idiocy....as usual....

Toby-my stallion turned gelding- got loose twice about 3 months back and i have no doubt he bred Misty and Honey. I wanted to get the vet out that weekend but my mom said it wasnt in the budget and i was overreacting, that they would be fine until the vet came to give them their spring shots

I tried to tell her that it wasnt fine AT ALL and that the vet needed to be out here soon but she didnt listen, as usual, only now my horses may have to pay the price. The vet was out yesterday to geld Toby, give shots, float teeth, etc. and told me that lutalyse wouldnt do anything. That it was too late and the girls would just have to go through with their pregnancys if they were in foal because the fetus was now attached to the uterus and couldnt be aborted. She took blood to test so i should know in a week or so. Of course i'm hysterical, and my mom could care less. She says i'm overreacting, that horses foal all the time and they would be fine

It might have not been as much of a big deal if Toby wasnt so darn chunky and thick! I should've just gone with my gut instinct and called the vet anyway and made and apointment that weekend without my mothers consent. It would be much better than having Misty and Honey's lives hanging in the balence like this.

I feel like a horse's butt. I let this happen. If I lose these two I honestly dont think i'd survive the grief. Please, everyone, if you could spare an extra moment please pray for my girls. They're all i've got in the world

It'll be fine. Trust me.

When you send in the gelding paper to AMHA, send in two stud reports just in case. Blood tests can be wrong.

I've been through this....twice now. I'll be PM'ing you.

Sure, it would have been nice if Honey was at least a year older. Three years old is kind of young to be foaling out but NOT unheard of.

Talk with your vet about this extensively and if you can start saving up money for some vet bills JUST in case. It wouldn't hurt. Plus, you have about 7-8 months to do so.

This forum is a GOOD way to get info on foaling. Don't worry. You have people to lean on.

Molly, Sorry this happened. I'm certainly no vet and maybe Dr Taylor and or Nathan or Andrea will chime in...but I believe Lutalyse WILL work on an attached fetus. As a matter of fact, my vet will not give it to bring on a heat cycle if there is ANY chance the mare is bred, without first doing an US. She said it's their center's practice because of having clients insist their mares were not in foal, the shot was given and subsequently the mares aborted.

I hope you have a positive result, no matter how you handle it.

Try to calm down and not be so hard on yourself. It was not your fault that your horse got loose in the first place. As I remember, the fencing was not adequate and you were doing the best you could to manage things on your own.

Don't be so hard on your mom either. I always say that parents don't come with instructions. My kids have proved me wrong many times so we all learn life lessons together.

You take very good care of your horses and you are learning a lot. You also have a vet you can call to help with the delivery. There's a lot of people here that are going to help you whenever you need it. Cheer up! You've got pretty babies coming and a lot of time to prepare!

I am almost positive there is a way to terminate a pregnancy after the embryo attaches to the wall. I would do some more research on this and make a few phone calls to mini horse specialist vets.

I agree with everyone else. You are doing the best you can and you love and care for your minis. That much is very obvious. You will get through this and you have lots of support right here. Will be praying for a good outcome for you.

thanks everyone. my mom wont let me call the vet out for a while because the vet bill was over $1,000. i tried telling her that the foal(s) would end up costing more than that but she wont listen. my vet said not to bother with it because it wouldnt work. as for mini specialists....my mom wont pay for a specialist and i doubt they'd do anything for free. i also doubt theres one in maine.

can I ask why are you so upset ? is it because of the fillys age/size or is one of the minis a dwarf?

one of them, Honey, is extremely small(27.5")and is only 2yrs old and refined and Misty is very fine boned whilst the father is very thick boned. basicly, i am worried for their lives.

Looking at your site, the mare is actually 3 years old. And in my opinion the stallion isnt any bigger boned then the mares. I wouldnt be worried about the size, but rather some other faults that could link to a not so great foal trying to be passed out.

At this point if they are bred, it would be worse on them to abort then to carry with the labor.

Honey is the little bay mare, she turned 2 in may. in person, toby is alot thicker than they are which is why i am so worried.

Your website lists her as an 08'

I just double checked and they are all born in '08. That would make them all 3 this year already.

3yrs old this year ..thats not so bad , a chunky stallion may not be ideal but it doesnt have to be a disaster either , try not to panic

Sorry but I didn't realise that you had only just gelded your boy - I thought it was some time ago, hope it all went well and he's now fine.

Is one of the mares (think it was Misty) one that you were concerned about some while back because your boy got loose and covered her? I think you were trying to persuade your Mum to let the vet inject her because you said she was too young. So how long after this did he cover the other one (Honey?). Will they both be foaling around the same time?

I wouldn't panic too much until you have the results of the blood tests - there is always the chance that as it was just the one quick covering for the two girls, they may have been in season but not necessarily at the right time to get pregnant.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

what happened was, Toby broke down the door to his stall(his run is attached to his stall) and he got to the mares and bred them, i'm sure he did. that happened twice in one week. the door is secured now-not even a full sized horse could break it i think!- and if i remember correctly Misty was in season that week, Honey wasnt. I know it sounds stupid but...i dont think Honey is pregnant for the simple fact that toby was never interested in her. i'd walk him past their fence and if honey came up, nothing, but if misty came up he acted like a stud, neighing, dropping, all that studly stuff. every time. even when honey was in season and misty wasnt. the vet told me that sometimes a stallion will be picky about what mare he breeds and he has never shown interest in honey for breeding.

Toby came through the surgery nicely, he's slightly stiff, but fine. i'm just happy he's finally a gelding!

this was a different instance. Misty was covered by him last year after he managed to untie himself while i was in the bathroom.

i hope your right Anna. thanks!

We had a stupid farm sitter "accidently" let out our stallion into the open mare field for eight hours. There were EIGHT mares in there.... not one got pregnant. Which was awesome, as some were only 2YOs...

I had my top stallion squeeze through an impossibly small opening and get into my yearling/2 year old paddock last year. Since he was in with the mares that he was breeding, I figured he broke into the yearlings paddock because someone was in heat in that paddock.

No foals by any of them this year. Often the 2 year olds are not ready to breed.

Do not blame yourself, we all have these accidents.
