What kind of hoof stand do those of you who trim use? My sister and I are thinking of getting one.

I rarely use it, but my former farrier (he moved) made me a stand similar to the Hoof Jack stand. [Just looked, I had no idea the HoofJack stand was over $150.]

I honestly can't remember if he charged me for it or not; but thinking he may have charged me like $50.

Thanks for replying, Chandab. I think my sister found the one she wants to use. Yes, I was surprised they are so pricey.

The one my farrier made was made an in between size, so I could use it with my saddle horses as well as my minis.
My sister found a pair of Tough 1 Handy Rasp. They fit in your hand like a scrub brush; one is coarse, one fine. Anyone use these? She found them on MiniTack. Great reviews.
I have one, or something similar. I found it hard to work for some reason. It did rasp the hoof OK but I couldn't quite get the hang of it. I blamed it on being left handed

Yes, I have those. I also found those hard to use and I am also left handed but didn't think that was a reason. I just thought I didn't know what I was doing

Sling is for when you are working on the bottom of the hooves (it cradles the hoof), post is for when you are rasping the toes from the top/front (they kind of "stand" on it).
@Marsha Cassada your farrier didn't have or use a hoof stand??!?!
Nope. He just gets down on the ground and wears farrier chaps.

I have one just like that. It's holding up nicely! My farrier uses it when he comes out. Glad you like yours!

We're thinking to take one of the magnets off and they are rather large and in the way. Maybe my farrier will want to use it when he comes next time.
I cannot conceive of a farrier who does not use a hoof stand! How on earth do you rasp the outside of the hoof wall? How would you attend to cracks on the outside? Goodness...

I never use a hoof stand. I tried, but it was a huge hassle/safety issue for me. I use my thigh/knee/hand to support the hoof for finish work. It much safer, to me.
My farrier doesn't use a hoof stand on the minis and my pony. He rests the foot on his knee. He tried to use on on my pony but it was too awkward for them both.
My farrier uses his thigh/ knee as well....no hoof stand.

Most of the farriers I've used, do use a hoof stand for full-size horses, now; but when I first got my horses, they all put the hoof on the knee/thigh to finish the toe/wall of the hoof.
With the minis, I rasp one-handed and hold with the other, as I'm too tall to use my knee, they find it uncomfortable to hold their leg that high. I do have the stand my farrier gave me, and I've been working on using it, but it'll take time for the horses to get used to it (and me, as well).

My farrier used the hoof stand and plans to order one. He had been considering one but wasn't sure about the size. He thinks this stand will work better for his geriatric horses than the one he has been using.
