:aktion033: :aktion033: YEAH, JACOB & JONAH !!! :aktion033: :aktion033:

Last week, my two year old hormone-crazed jack, escaped (no clue how), and entered the broodmare pasture with foals. Just a few months ago, Sammy was my sweet little fella!

Well, Jonah and Jacob (quiet, calm, spotted geldings), came to the rescue! They put themselves between the mares and him. Interestingly, the herd's mild-manner boss mare, placed herself as "bait" between Jacob and Jonah, while I ran the others into ANOTHER "gated" pasture. I was awestruck by the coordinated effort in nature.

Soon as the gate was closed and herd secured, I tied a lead-rope around the bad boy's neck and promptly escorted Sammy to a barn stall (12x12 matted with open panel front).

Jonah and Jacob came to our farm 1-1/2 months ago from Donna Herold (Qtr Raes).....traded for a mare. Seems every time her stallion, Gold, tried to breed one of "his gals", the two donkeys brayed up a storm?

: Needless to say, Gold's romantic "mood" seemed to wane! Poor Donna was in a quandry.

SORRY, DONNA......I certainly made out on the trade!!!

WAY TO GO JACOB AND JONAH :aktion033: :aktion033: :aktion033: It really is remarkable when you can actually see how donkeys "WORK" to protect there herd. We watched ours last year....along with a loaded gun...keep a bear at bay, for a few days. Mine would line up at the fence and bray so loud before the bear was even seen, then my hinny would keep all the mares way in the back of the pasture, if the mares tried to come forward --he (Snickers) would pin those ears and chase them right back. I wouldnt be without my donkeys in the horse pasture, they might be small..but there noise is very loud. Got to love them! Cindy, I think you got the best of the deal CONGRATS on new donkey ownership. Corinne

OH Cindy,

I DO think you got the best deal!! Believe me I would NEVER have parted with those 2 boys if they hadn't stressed poor Gold out so much.

This was the most weird situation-Jakob & Jonah (donkeys-gelded) have run with my little herd of mares for months. Everything has been fine, until it was time to put the stallion in with his herd. Every time Gold got ready to breed a mare, the donkey boys would run over there and chase him away. I "think" because Gold is a young stallion, he was actually intimidated by them. Well, I can't have my mares NOT getting bred so ended up trading Jakob and Jonah to Cindy. She is happy with the trade and I traded back for a mare that I had sold to her 2 years ago.

Guess that is what you call a win/win situation!!

So has anyone ever experienced anything like that?

Those of you that run donkeys in with your herd, do you ever have a problem like that?

It isn't that Gold didn't like the donkeys, they would hang out together BUT they absolutely refused to let him breed the mares, in fact they even got a bit "nasty" to Gold!

Cool!! Glad the guys kept the "big boy" away from their mares!!

A few years ago we had a 2 day old foal out with the herd (older very sedate jennies) and a stray dog came wandering into their small pasture. Needless to say all the jennies surrounded this newborn to protect him from the bid bad dog (the dog was acting very agressive towardss the donks). The donks were carrying on braying and screaming.

Luckily my hubby was home that day and he grabbed a shotgun and headed to the girls pasture. As the donks saw him coming the eldest jennet turned towards the dog and bit him and that, of course, really ticked the dog off and the old jennet led the dog away from the herd. She headed right towards Ron, who saw was Spark was doing, raided his gun and gave the dog some serious dental work as it went by. Spark then took the dog in her teeth and paraded around with it. She did the "donkey strut" (you know the one they do when they are really excited and they seem to float).

It really is unbelievable what a silly looking donkey can actually do when their herd is threatened.
