When genetic testing for red factor, do they test for the presence of red or the absence of black?

In other words, if you have a horse that you are not sure if it is a silver bay or a sorrel with flaxen mane and tail, what would they actuall test for?

Test for red factor. That will tell you if the horse is black or red.

If it comes out black, then he'd likely be silver bay. If it comes out red, then he'd be sorrel/chestnut.
