Hi all,
Many of you know that my husband is a commercial fisherman (like Deadliest Catch...many of those people are our friends and neighbors and my husband's co-workers). Many of you also know that nearly two years ago, now, my husband's nephew and his crew were killed doing this job on the Tillamook Bar in Garibaldi, OR. I got the call in the early hours of the morning (had just delivered a silver buckskin colt, who now, also, is deceased, but I named him in honor of Craig)...well, it's a different way of life, and my husband's always been on the back deck as in a deckhand not a captain. He has driven a few boats here and there, but in the 35+ years he's been "in" the fishing industyr, has never owned a boat.
That changed as of Thanksgiving Day. A man who was friends and a father figure to our nephew, Craig, decided he'd offer a lease-to-buy option with an Oregon permit and boat/gear to Martin, so that he could get his foot in the door (it is VERY expensive to buy a boat and permits along with all the gear). I guess a little bit of a positive spark leftover from Craig's life now over.
This is a big step, though he doesn't technically own the boat, 50% of his take will go to paying it off. The way I see it is that he will be gone the same amount of time, the same hazards and risks, for more money. I have been hoping for YEARS that he would take this step and here it is.
The boat is not "much" by standards of what Martin has fished on in the past (the Aleutian Ballad on Deadliest Catch and the Maverick and Cornelia Marie are all boats he has or could fish on easily), it is a 38-foot boat (the others are closer to a hundred plus) named the Casino. Like its namesake, it will be somewhat of a gamble. Hopefully a good one. If you're in the NW and want some fresh crab, look us up. We'll soon be up to our eyeballs in it.
This is very last-minute as the season starts Dec. 1 and dump day for the pots is a few days before that. The gear isn't even ready to go and they don't know if the boat will even start, yet (hasn't been run for a year and a half).
I'll give updates now and then and will post some photos...hopefully "sandy claws" will be good to us, and merciful, too.
The good thing about a small boat is he won't be tempted to play around in the bad weather. He will be home, safe, where before he would be out in 70 mph+ storms on the bigger boats.
Here she is, all 38 feet of her:
(sorry this is all I could get, my youngest son is afraid of the boat, so we had to stay up on the dike to take photos, rather than down on the dock)
Thanks for listening and the well-wishes.
Liz
