Hi all,

Many of you know that my husband is a commercial fisherman (like Deadliest Catch...many of those people are our friends and neighbors and my husband's co-workers). Many of you also know that nearly two years ago, now, my husband's nephew and his crew were killed doing this job on the Tillamook Bar in Garibaldi, OR. I got the call in the early hours of the morning (had just delivered a silver buckskin colt, who now, also, is deceased, but I named him in honor of Craig)...well, it's a different way of life, and my husband's always been on the back deck as in a deckhand not a captain. He has driven a few boats here and there, but in the 35+ years he's been "in" the fishing industyr, has never owned a boat.

That changed as of Thanksgiving Day. A man who was friends and a father figure to our nephew, Craig, decided he'd offer a lease-to-buy option with an Oregon permit and boat/gear to Martin, so that he could get his foot in the door (it is VERY expensive to buy a boat and permits along with all the gear). I guess a little bit of a positive spark leftover from Craig's life now over.

This is a big step, though he doesn't technically own the boat, 50% of his take will go to paying it off. The way I see it is that he will be gone the same amount of time, the same hazards and risks, for more money. I have been hoping for YEARS that he would take this step and here it is.

The boat is not "much" by standards of what Martin has fished on in the past (the Aleutian Ballad on Deadliest Catch and the Maverick and Cornelia Marie are all boats he has or could fish on easily), it is a 38-foot boat (the others are closer to a hundred plus) named the Casino. Like its namesake, it will be somewhat of a gamble. Hopefully a good one. If you're in the NW and want some fresh crab, look us up. We'll soon be up to our eyeballs in it.

This is very last-minute as the season starts Dec. 1 and dump day for the pots is a few days before that. The gear isn't even ready to go and they don't know if the boat will even start, yet (hasn't been run for a year and a half).

I'll give updates now and then and will post some photos...hopefully "sandy claws" will be good to us, and merciful, too.

The good thing about a small boat is he won't be tempted to play around in the bad weather. He will be home, safe, where before he would be out in 70 mph+ storms on the bigger boats.

Here she is, all 38 feet of her:

(sorry this is all I could get, my youngest son is afraid of the boat, so we had to stay up on the dike to take photos, rather than down on the dock)

Thanks for listening and the well-wishes.

Congratualtions Liz! It is a good feeling to work for yourself. I know it is a dangerous work but Martin is a sensible man. Now at least it will be his good sense deciding when he is out or not.

BTW, I love crab!

Best wishes for a successful run.

Good luck, Liz. I sincerely hope it goes right and well for you and yours.

Hey Liz,

WOW! That is an exciting new venture! My first thoughts were identical to what Annette said...

While it is a risky business, at least now Martin will be the one making the decisions, rather than some absentee owner or a captain with less common sense. Plus, I know Martin will treat his crew like family.

Here's to great success and tons of crab for many years to come.

(And as you well know, we LOVE crab and will be happy to "Help!"

Well, shoot, many of you who attend NW shows have come upon the good fortune of a few "bugs" extra. Guess that will likely be more often now.

Thanks for the well wishes, and Annette, that's true, and has been a source of frustration in the past.

It will be an adventure, and likely a string of them.

Crab is great, but boy, when you get so much of it so often, it does get..um...old! *LOL*

This time of year is good for it, though. Everyone's out testing their gear and such in the river, so they bring in a few limits (a dozen per person). Nothing like getting it warm out of the cooker.

For now, Martin's crew is the current owner's son(s) and a previous hand. That way, guys that know the boat will be right there, and they have an interest in making sure the boat does well (their sake as well as their Dad's). Kind of feels like family, anyway, as I know Bill (current owner) felt about Craig. My husband spent a lot of time looking after Craig. Feels like Craig's somehow managed to return the favor. Can almost hear him say, "Uncle Marty, here's your chance." That grin! *LOL*

(a pic of Craig taken on Bill's (the guy selling the boat to Martin now) boat up in Alaska the Summer before he died. They did seining together up in Bristol Bay. I found this pic on someone's photo album online (the F/V Maverick from Deadliest Catch not long after he passed away.)

Congratulations to you both.

My son did long line fishing one time off the coast here he got so homesick he didnt go out again. I think it takes special people to do that type of work and the ones they leave at home are even more special.

Good Luck and God Bless, Kathy

How exciting and BIG Congratulations Liz!!! I'd sure love some of them crabs...alas...we're all the way across on different coasts! Anyway......My best to you and Martin, and may he always stay safe!

That is good news Liz.... think he will enjoy having his own boat! Pictures when you can.

WHOOO HOOOO!!!!!

I'm thrilled for you! Best of luck and may his catches be plentiful!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Hurray for Sandy Claws!

Wish we were close enough to help you eat a few bugs!

That is so incredibly awesome Liz!!! You KNOW Craig had something to do with it. He also better be keeping an eye out to keep Martin safe too!!!

I wish you guys the best of luck! You know I think of you as family and you do wayyy too much for us and others. Hope we can help. Mark said he could make Martin a website if he wants to promote the crab. I know you can do that too. The absolute best of luck for you, Martin, Ken, Brandon and Simon jr,, I mean Colton.

Liz, That is very exciting for you guys. Congratulations.

I send along wishes that you have many many successful seasons.

New chapters to our lives are often kind of scary along with the excitement

of it. It sounds, however, like Martin is well versed and prepared to take

on this task.

My Godfather owned 3 fishing vessels when I was young.....I just don't see

crab 'getting old' LOL or any other kind of seafood.

Send up prayers and a thanks to Craig, he can travel with Unlce Marty and keep

him safe.

All my best light and good wishes for a safe and productive season.

Oh Liz, my sincerest congratulations to the Captain and his Wife! I'm sure Kyan and Craig will both be out there on the waves guiding Martin to safe harbor and watching over his crew.

I'm not much of a seafood fan since my mom's allergic to shellfish but you can put one back in the waves for me.

Run free, little bug. *LOL*

Congratulations! And a safe trip/season for the Casino and all her crew...

I confess - I have been addicted to Deadliest Catch from day one. Another F/V captain lives just down the road from us here (none of the boats that have been on the series) - and so he was my "connection". He is no longer involved in the industry - but I still watch - knowing that it is edited etc. but still feeling the danger, hard work & excitement.

I even have a F/V Time Bandit hoodie...
default_blush.png
... and I cannot tell you how many times someone has noticed the Time Bandit insignia and asked me if I was from Dutch Harbor or knew the crew....

....yeeeeah riiight!

Crab get old? I wish. A few years ago my body decided that it was allergic to shellfish after a lifetime of loving it - NOT FAIR!!!
default_wacko.png
- and thus I have been deprived of such delights for far too long!!
