How do you get rid of horse flies & deer flies?

If you want to reduce the number of horse, deer, dog and other biting flies-paint a beach ball with black spray paint, hang it in an area where they are the worst ( several areas) and coat the ball with Tanglefoot. The flies are attracked to the ball by the movement and heat and when they land...

    The Stallion Affect

I have been tracking the gestations on my mares for several years and really believe that the stallion has some effect on the gestation period. By the way Mizbeth, Mari has gone 327, 328, but went 318 this year. Most of my mares were early this year for some reason. Rick

    E coli Endotox

I've always used 1/3 of a tube. I usually notch the plunger so I don't have to guess while administering.

    Abortion in mares

I had a mare go into labor on Tuesday that was about 2 months early. I could tell the mare was in labor and when I checked, could feel the red sack about 6" deep. I nicked the red sack with a razor knife and delivered a live foal. She had very little hair and lived about 30 min. The cord was...

Advertising in World or Journal-who does your ads?

You might want to try Mark Partin, he hasn't done any lately but might if you inquire. He has done World ads for Impressible Minis, JSW, Dawg Patch, Faith Farm, and others. You can contact him at [email protected].

A very important article to read

That was a good article, but it has less to do with breeding a 2yr old than it does palpating a high strung horse. I know a couple of people who perforated the gut while ultrasounding, these were not young mares so it's not an age related thing. I usually feed my mares when I ultrasound them...

I'm interested in hearing it from both sides

The way I look at it, Coggins and Health Papers are shipping costs; the cost of the horse is the cost of the horse. If the buyer wants a prepurchase exam, that is also their responsibility. That being said, many times I do supply the Coggins and Health Papers, especially to people who don't...

How are horse sales at your end of the WORLD?

OK, I'll watch for Guardian. Beverly put her foot down and after a heated discussion, I reduced prices further. Kimberle, you should check my sales page, you'll find a surprise; it was not my idea.

How are horse sales at your end of the WORLD?

Hey Kimberle, you know your credit is always good with me!! You always need just one more, and I haven't made a trip to SA in a while. I'll have to keep an eye out for Profit; who's he with, Lee or Josh? Either way they'll do great with him. Rick

How are horse sales at your end of the WORLD?

It's been really slow for me this year, I even reduced my prices by 1/3 and still got only a couple of inquiries. I plan to hold my ground til the market turns around, although that is a source of contention with my wife. I refuse to sell a quality horse for cheap, I'd rather feed them for a...

    Fire Ants and Mini's

Phorid flies are small flies that attack fireants only. They are not native but have been introduced to certain areas with some success. The fly lays an egg on a fireant and the egg develops in the head until the head falls off. Pretty neat end to a fireant in my book. The University of FL...

    Fire Ants and Mini's

This subject comes up on ocassion and I hate to see people trying to battle these critters with home made remedies. They may work if you only have a few mounds to deal with, but if you live in the deep south, it's better to bring out the big guns. Orthene works good as a killer and smells...

    Fire Ants and Mini's

Extinguish Plus is the best product for killing fireants. It has the same ingredients as Amdro Pro (which is better than plain Amdro) and an IGR; so it has an initial kill but also sterilizes the workers and extra queens. If broadcast at 2# per acre in the spring or summer, it will eliminate...

    grass options

First, since you already don't have grass, put in a sprinkler system. When it gets dry and the grass quits growing, the horses keep eating; results = no grass. The cost for a system would probaby be under a couple of hundred, if you do it yourself. At this time of year, I would plant Annual...

Need owners opinion again on a new tool

The sling I use is made by Munks Mfg, you can get an idea of how it's used at: http://www.livestocksling.com/Sheep-All_Products.html The small one cost about $20-$25 and the larger yearling sized sling is about $30-$40. My pulley came from Cabela's at a cost of $14 or you can get an electric...

Need owners opinion again on a new tool

If you are looking for one to use for farrier work, I would suggest a calf sling and a cheap pulley. I have used a sling and pulley and am able to trim and clip by myself. If you get their feet off the floor, they relax and you can work much quicker with less stress. Rick

Hurricane Report From Santa Fe Texas

I spoke with Mike R. last night. He had the generator up and was watching football. They had no damage to the house or barn and only had one section of fence to repair and some branches to pick up. They are about 30 miles north of Beaumont. John, glad your family and animals came through ok...

    Toxicity of Oak trees

I also have had problems with acorns. I have live oaks and some of the horses have a fondness for eating them; on the mature horses it is usually not a problem other than mild colic which we treat with Banamine and oil. The major problem is with the young horses but not all of them. We had...

Purina stores closing down, more farms liquidated

Looking at those prices, I'm not sure that the feed mill is totally to blame. Your prices must be from shipping and a high markup at the retail level. I bought Strategy today for $13.70 a bag and Safe Choice for $13.50 in South Alabama. The prices have gone up on everything. Whole corn has...
