    Figuring Out Supplement Dosages

Actually, magnesium is water soluble and they pass what they don't use. Just FYI. So, to understand - if a 1,000 lb horse needs 6,000mgs of magnesium, a 200 lb horse only needs 1,200mgs? Just checking, that's what I've been doing, too...but then my brain started to think too hard LOL!

    Figuring Out Supplement Dosages

I've been puzzling over this for a while, but then I thought I'd ask the experts When you supplement, do you dose for a horse, or do you scale it down for a mini? i.e., Remission calls for 1 ounce for a 1,000 lb horse to get 6,000mgs of magnesium. If I scale it down, my 200 lb mini Rocket...

If you've had an Impaction Colic...

Okay, you've got me researching now! This is fascinating. Basically, minis seem prone to fecaliths. This website says: "According to Nicole Johnson, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, fecaliths are more common in miniature horses because they are often fed diets that are more suitable to full-size horses and...

If you've had an Impaction Colic...

Thanks Dr. Taylor...do you have any statistics?

If you've had an Impaction Colic...

I have to agree with your logic here...I know full size horses also impact, but it just makes sense that the same amount of feed expanding in a smaller intestine would, if it was going to, have a better chance of impacting...particularly around the cecum. Rocket is coming back from starvation...

If you've had an Impaction Colic...

This is interesting as I was going to ask a similar question. My "foster" mini from CHMR, Rocket, who is 21 years now, is on 1 cup (1 lb) am/pm Tribute Maturity plus free access to grass hay/heated water. A few weeks ago he went into what I call a "GI slowdown" - he was not eating as quickly...

Tough 1 Mini "Waterproof" Turnout Sheets

Update: I sprayed mine with Coleman tent waterproofing (a spray can, $6) and it's working! Yeah! There is hope for those who got theirs and is not waterproof.

Tough 1 Mini "Waterproof" Turnout Sheets

Yes, but when the packaging says "Waterproof" it should be "Waterproof" or it's false advertising. Checked out your link...I am looking for one that is not insulated...mini-Cooper has plenty of that! Just want to keep him dry!

Tough 1 Mini "Waterproof" Turnout Sheets

Re: Tough 1 - they said that there was a lot that was good, that most were not. Maybe those who had good results had the good lot. They freely admitted to having bad lots of full size horse turnouts last year. I'd try the waterproofing; if that doesn't work, you have a nice fitting stable...

Tough 1 Mini "Waterproof" Turnout Sheets

The one I have is just a turnout sheet...no warmth per say. However, I never have to spray my Weatherbeaters for my large horses...I've had one for 5 years, and it still is watertight.

Tough 1 Mini "Waterproof" Turnout Sheets

Hi All, Just a head's up as the price is great...they are *not* waterproof. I bought one from Chick's Saddlery, and when mini-Cooper got soaked through, they generously took it back with all shipping costs covered. However, they told me it was not meant for rain...

    Update Request

Rocket is doing fine...he's really putting on the lbs now. And he's so nicely mannered! He even has two poop piles...and only goes there! I'm working on the broken crest, don't know if that will come up. I'd post a pic but CHMR is doing something already, so you have to wait . He is starting...

    Equine Conjunctivitis anyone with experience?

Marty...just saw this thread. Do you have a fly mask for him? That keeps the debris out of his eyes, especially when healing. When it's really windy, I put Cooper's on to keep his one eye socket clean.

    mini-Cooper Bobbing For Apples

He is so good! He had an attack of laminitis this spring, and between my farrier doing an extreme trim so he rocked back on his heels and would break over his toes at a walk, a grazing muzzle, pain meds, and the pastures *finally* maturing in MI (very late, but finally), he is back to his funny...
