So a friend asked me what size does a miniature have to be, before it is classified as a pony? I'm not able to answer this correctly so any info would be great!

AMHA, 34" and under

AMHR, "under" (some still say "A") division is for 34" and under, "over" (some still say "B") division is for over 34" but not taller than 38"

And technically, any equine under 14.2 hands IS a "pony"!

Also depends on where the equine is measured - in the US it is usually at the last mane hair, but in other places it can be the withers.

In "other" places it is always the withers, In point of fact the American Miniature Horse is the only horse in the world not measured to the withers!
