Hi,

Me again, while I was at work my husband put our jack back in with the girls. one is bred the other is in heat. He settled down and stopped running them but when he tries to breed nothing happens, if you know what I mean  My husband has been outside all day and said she will stand for him but he gets on for a minute and slides off. What is up with that? Why isn't he getting "excited"? I know this sounds weird, sorry

Any ideas on what to do? Thanks!

Give him a little time..... I know my boy acted the same way when I put this last jenny in with him, he would chase her, then jump on her, and never be ready if you know what I mean, then 5 minutes later he would be eating at the bale, and all of a sudden HELLO he was ready and accomplished his task.........It was so funny, I thought hmmmm must be some good hay!haha

Thanks for the reply, makes me feel better.

I just came in and every once in awhile he tries again, but nothing. Not even a little bit of something

. How long before the "HAY"

: kicked in? Thanks again.

Well that is funny.....at least he is still trying.

I know with Blizzard, he is a proven breeder, so I was thinking hmmmm what is wrong, why won't he breed, well, then I started thinking the poor guy might need VIAGRA!lol

So just out of the blue he is eating hay and I watched as he got excited while standing there looking at her, then he proceeded over, and got the job done!LOL The funny thing is there where 2 in heat at the same time and I just think he was being LAZY.

Is your jenny in full heat, standing for him, mouthing, or smacking her lips?

Has he bred before?

Hi, yes she is in full heat, she is doing all the above.

And he has bred before. We hand bred him to another but it took him forever to get "excited".

It is funny you mentioned the Viagra, when my husband called me at work today to tell me Solstice (our jack) wasn't performing, the first thing he said was "I think Sol needs some Viagra!"

He is new to us but has produced and he is only 5. I don't know, maybe he'll be up for it tomorrow. :bgrin

I think since he is in with her given a little time, he'll get the job done, maybe he has stagefright, and wants some privacy!!!!!!!!

I guess I will just have to wait and see. Hopefully he gets the hang of it

I can tell you that I have my Tarbaby in with 8 jennies. Two are bred yet for this fall. I have never seen him breed yet. And I've spent hours and hours out there watching. I even haltered a jenny that was in heat (like I do for the horses, the stud would jump on the mare in a heartbeat) but Tarbaby stood there and looked at me like "what the heck you doing!". But I have to admit that I do think they're all bred, I haven't seen any jenny in heat for a few months so maybe he's a "Nighttime" breeder. I asked others if he could be shy and everyone tells me they breed anytime. So I guess if I were you, I"d just assume we will breed her, I guess there's no way you can make him do it anyway

: . I was thinking that I may get no little donkeys next year but now I do think I will.

Hi there...I am thinking he might be over excited....give him a few days

: In response to your other post. I kept my Jack in with my Jenny's at all times (he was so mellow & laid back) When they had baby's I seperated them for a week or so. When he did get frisky with them the Jenny's handled it quite well. They kicked him and he got the message real fast. Funny, he was always excited to see the newborns...I swear he knew Mama was going to be in heat soon

It is also a dominate thing.

One of my Friend's has a Jack and he will not breed the Jenny unless she shows the proper submissiveness.

If she won't, he will mount but not do anything. Was the darnest thing to watch.

Little while later another Jenny wanted attention, she was doing the "foal" baby lips with her head out and down. He had no problem with doing what he is supposed to do with her.

Friend said it took that one Jenny a month to get the idea.

Don't know if all Jacks are like that....but could be what is going on.

Hi, just an update.

We have been watching when outside but he hasn't actually bred her in front of us. But everyone is getting along. Maybe he is a private and/or night time kinda guy

: ! Thanks for the helpful replys.

I have another ? , hope I am not a pain

.

I will post a new topic.

how did things go with your "ED" donkey? kinda late but one thing i noticed about my jacks is, they keep everything tucked away the first few times they try to get on, to make sure the jennet isn't going to kick them. after all, we wouldn't want the equipment damaged!! just proves how smart donks are!

HI, HADN'T THOUGHT OF THAT, ! WE NEVER DID SEE HIM DO "IT" BUT I THINK SHE IS BRED.

i did not know anything about your accident till this week when i started going through the old posts... and did not see yours about the accident itself, not sure how long things stay on here before they "fall" off, obviously can't keep everything as there are people who have been members for years and i only saw posts for about 3 months...

we've had our share of horse accidents ourselves but thank God nothing more than a trip to the ER or, in one case, a couple months of therapy... although my now 15-year-old still faces surgery for the broken nose she got when she was 6 (just scar tissue making one side lumpy, but they said to wait till she was grown before trying again, the first time it just came back after the surgery)
