I had a mini that had a severe colic episode followed by a second and then he foundered. Turned out he had eaten a blister beetle in my hay that tore up his stomach. We ended up having to euthanize him but check your hay well for blister beetles. I will only buy 1st or early second cutting hay...
If you are going to do trail driving I would recommend a sliding back band. I agree with doing the V style breast collar it makes a huge difference for my pony. I would opt for a quick release set up as well if possible.
I am currently in Fairbanks Alaska but soon to move back to the lower 48 next month! At this point we are headed to Northwest Arkansas. Did not see anyone from Arkansas
The frey carriage looks almost exactly the same as the Pacific smart cart. Even the website pictures look the same. If it is the same cart as the Smart cart you need to consider the size of your horse or pony. It is very adjustable and a great ride for the driver but it is very heavy for...
I have a stocky 36 inch pony and I bought the smart cart which turned out to be way too heavy. The ride is amazing and it seats two and will fit up to a 44 inch pony.(super adjustable) I purchased the hyperbike this summer and my pony seems to pull that one much easier. It has a super wide wheel...
I am thinking about purchasing the hyperbike for Jack this summer. The smart cart is just a little too heavy for him to pull up and down the hills in Alaska. I currently have the Comfy Fit harness with quick release for my marathon shafts. Will my current harness set up work for the hyperbike or...
I was so happy to find this posting this year. I Alaska we have 8 months of winter and I have been searching the internet to try to find a ski joering harness like the style they use in France. I have even gone so far as to reach out via email in hopes of finding a harness and semi rigid set up...
You two look great! Isn't it great to be able to have fun? How tall is your mini? He looks very elegant and I love your cart!
Thank you everyone for your kind comments. Jack is 36" tall. He fits perfect with my smart cart. He is a hardy little guy and he loves to pull but sometimes it seems the...
Hi Everyone,
I have not posted in quite a while but I just had to post some photos of my boys first horse show in Alaska. At our local fair the ASQHA (Alaska State Quarter Horse Association) puts on a small show and they have a pleasure driving class. Jack did great! He got first place out of...
Thank you so much for your kind comment about my pony. I decided to allow his bridlepath to grow back. There has been a lot of braiding and banding and brushing but it is starting to look pretty good. He has graduated from the Zebra look.LOL I like my pony to have more of a natural look. I left...
We have a small local show coming up in June. I have my outfit together and my apron but I need to focus on my pony. In the past he was body clipped, razored, flat ironed and shaved within an inch of his life and he hated every minuate.LOL I call him my little miniature man he does not want to...
I purchased a driving apron over the winter and I am not sure if it fits correctly. I am a pretty small person but the apron does not meet completely in the back. When I sit down you can see a gap in the fabric. Is that normal? I contacted the maker and was thinking about requesting additional...
I was in your shoes last summer. I had never driven a horse before and I live in Fairbanks Alaska where very few people own horses much less drive Mini's. I also had a budget around $2000. I was on the web every day looking at horses wanting to find an experienced show horse that needed a good...
I think my original post was kinda confusing. I am asking about having a header at a small local non rated show. The show is held at our small state fair every year and they have one driving class that usually has one or no entries. Because no one really shows in driving classes here in Alaska...
Thank you everyone for your comments. I am going to have my vet out and have her take a look at him and possibly have some blood work done. I have cut back on his supplements, beet pulp and oil. I have also started to weigh his hay so I am more accurate with his feedings.
