We do a DG base and then put stall mats over it and bed with a fine mini flake shaving. For the outside paddock, we do the same DG base and then put "playground bark" over that to add cushion and softness.
We have stall savers over a packed dirt base and there is no other way I would go back to the think matts. One stall saver is about 40-50lbs and I can pick the box up alone, they attach to the stall wall all the way around, do not move, are I use sooooo much less shavings the stalls stay dry and I just think overall this is a much better product, with awesome customer service. Oh, and you can do at least 2 stalls with the stall savers to one stall with the think rubber matting
