My small dog of choice is a mini dachshund.. the long haired variety is VERY laid back. SMooths a little more energy and wires typical terrier personalities. Daphne is my Diva dog and she would spend the day on a lap or chair depending... as long as there is jewelry involved!

Love our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They were bred to be a lap and "comfort" dog,

and ours certainly is! She was content even as a young puppy to spend her evenings

sitting in a lap.

I absolutely love the kind Charles Spaniels, great, loving, beautiful little dogs. I've met some yappy ones, but I'd like to blame the owners. Havanese are great dogs as well, super cuddly

My suggestion would be a toy or miniature poodle though. AWESOME little dogs, the smartest small dog you can find (unless you consider a border collie "small" :DOH! .) My mother bred miniatures when I was young and I have a chocolate toy now. I've loved them all. They don't shed (this is a WONDERFUL asset in my opinion,) super trainable and obsessively affectionate little guys. They ARE retrievers, so mom'll have plenty of stuffed dog toys strewn about and a ball nudged into her hand pretty frequently, but I love them all the more for it. The tiny toys are adorable, but my preference has always been the regular toys and miniatures on the smaller end of the breed. Teacups are scarily delicate (and on the lower end of the IQ scale from what I've experienced

.) My little dutch will throw a teacup every now and then and they sell like hot cakes at top-dollar, but I'd never own one myself. I'm scared the little guy would break a leg jumping off the couch!

I've been going to puppy classes for the past several months. Havanese would win hands down if I was going to get a pup for my parents. Not only are they adorable, they shed very little and are wonderful people dogs with a gentle and somewhat laid back attitude. I've had Scotties and the corgi as "small" dogs and I can't really recommend either as they are both very "busy" and I think a lot would have issues with the terrier attitude and with the Corgi's hair loss and need to be busy. All of the Havanese that I have met are real sweethearts.

(For what it is worth, I will never be without a Corgi, no matter how much of his hair I eat and wear :DOH! but that is ME

my Havanese. Non shedding, hypoallergenic, sturdy, playful, smart, loving - pretty much any color under the sun - average 10-12 lbs. If you are not into showing, keep them in a puppy cut and they are pretty much hassle-free.

I raise & show my Havanese - we are expecting 2 litters in the next week or so - Daisy has 7 baking in there and Annie has 5 - going to be a busy couple of months! Both moms are huge and really ready to have puppies - if I ever figure out how to post pix I will get them up here for you all to see.
