I hope he's recovering nicely.
I am a foster mom and worked with countless rescue dogs/groups over the years and have only ever removed a portion of tail due to a health reason, within the rescue groups often referred to as 'happy tail' where they get a seemingly small laceration to the tip of the tail and EVERY time they wag bang it against something and open it back up.
I think out of all my rescues I’ve only ever fostered 2 maybe 3 where part of the tail was taken off – generally that was after literally weeks to months of trying every other method to save the tail and once the vet made a clean cut that could really be sutured up it healed well and within the normal time frames.
That would be the only reason I would opt to do it on an adult dog and after having gone thru it a few times am more likely to try a few things then ask the vet to take it off.
