I loved in another thread where people were talking about a song their mama sang...

What songs did your parents sing to you?

My mother's favorite bedtime song was

Bushel and a Peck

[/media]When I was just a wee little lad,

Full of health and joy,

My father homeward came one night

And gave to me a toy.

A wonder to behold it was

With many colors bright

And the moment I laid eyes on it,

It became my heart's delight.

Refrain:

It went "Zip" when it moved, and "Bop" when it stopped,

And "Whirrr" when it stood still.

I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

The first time that I picked it up

I had a big surprise

Cause right on the bottom were two big buttons

That looked like big green eyes

I first pushed one and then the other,

Then I twisted it's lid

And when I set it down again, here is what it did:

(Refrain)

It first marched left, and then marched right

And then marched under a chair

And when I looked where it had gone

It wasn't even there

I started to cry, but my daddy laughed

'Cause he knew that I would find,

When I turned around my marvelous toy

Would be chugging from behind.

(Refrain)

The years have gone by too quickly it seems,

I have my own little boy

And yesterday I gave to him

My marvelous little toy:

His eyes nearly popped right out of his head

And he gave a squeal of glee!

Neither one of us knows just what it is

But he loves it just like me!

Now I've got myself all misty-eyed...

So what were your goodnight songs?

My dad comes from a very musical family. He plays guitar and piano and sings very well so naturally he sang a lot of songs to me, but my favorite was always "Blackbird"-the Beatles. A beautiful song that I sing when I'm feeling a little low. Of course not with an audience. My own singing is a little ummm....subpar

That's so weird that you started this thread. I was thinking about this yesterday for a couple of reasons. My dad died from colon cancer in July. My twin twin brother stars radiation today for throat cancer. So this song popped into my head that my dad used to sing to us at bedtime or if my brother and I were fighting. It made me very emotional, but I could feel my father around me....

♥ Twinkle, Twinkle

♥ Itsy Bitsy Spider

♥ Three Blind Mice

♥ Lot of silly ones they made up (my favorites!)

Sorry to hear about your Dad and brother, Matt. Hope all goes well for your brother.

Thank you, Gene. I believe it's stage one so, hopefully, all should be fine....

LOL! Great topic! I grew up in a French household, so the most popular song my folks sang to us was Frere Jacques!

The other one I remember (that I just googled):

Julia A. Fletcher Carney (1824-1908)

Little drops of water, little grains of sand,

Make the mighty ocean and the pleasant land.

So the little moments, humble though they be,

Make the mighty ages of Eternity.

So the little errors lead the soul away

From the paths of virtue far in sin to stray.

Little deeds of kindness, little words of love,

Help to make earth happy, like the Heaven above.

Only one that I can recall, and it was a Christmasy one that dad would sing closer to Christmas, he'd start up anytime someone said "Christmas".

Has anyone seen the movie Mighty Joe Young? I love the song the mom sings to her daughter, then her daughter later sings to Joe.

If you haven't seen it, I recommend it!

I've seen the movie, its very good. Just can't recall the song off the top of my head, but seems I remember as much as I liked it.

I don't recall my Mom ever singing...however, my Dad, who is quite a character, would always make me laugh when he sung the 'Beans' song...you know...beans beans the musical fruit, the more you eat the more you toot, the more you toot, the better you feel, so have beans beans for every meal...there was another verse but I can't remember it.
