In addition, when wanting to make sure that there is nothing retained inside the mare, an easy method is to gently run a hose into the placenta. It should fill up like a balloon, which shows there are no breaks or holes or parts left inside. (Our vet showed us that over 15 years ago and it's proven to be invaluable.)

Thanks for the link! I found it informational. I've been examining the placenta much like she showed. With the exception of inspecting the area around the cervical star. Now I will know to do that too.
