On a regular basis I've been finding this dried, cream colored "stuff" under Image's rectal area (rectum doesn't seem to be involved - just the area beneath it). I just can't tell if it is irritation from his rectum or from his tail or what...

I've bathed his hiney and tail/dock with betadine shampoo and can't find any type of lesion, but the dried discharge always returns. I even had my farrier check him out and he said he'd never seen anything like it. I deworm Image regularly and his stool is totally normal. He seems healthy in every other way.

Anyone know what is going on?

LOL!! I wasn't sure if that was appropriate or not. I'll take my camera to the barn this afternoon when I go back out and see if there is any of the ick there. Poor Image, having to have such a picture of himself posted for the whole world to see.

I figure if folks dont want to see the pics they wont click on the link...

What color is the skin under his tail? Typically, "smegma" type skin/oil discharge can be equivalent to the color of the skin... usually black for dark skin, and then anywhere from cream to orange to almost a bloody color for lighter skin.

Also, has he been anywhere where he'd sweat?

I like Micro tek shampoo and spray for general "icky" stuff. It works on bacteria, fungus etc. Smells good and dries clear and clean. Might be worth a try. It is made by EQyss.

Here are the much anticipated pictures of Image's hiney. He was NOT happy to pose for the following pictures and I will warn you they are as my daughter called it "Immie Porn" LOL!!

Might it be originating from under the tail?

My stallion had the same EXACT thing happen. Even looked just like that. I have never seen anything like it and it would be good to know what it is.

Good Luck!

My youngest daughter (and Image's owner) just saw the pictures I posted and said, "mom, I can't believe you would embarrass Image like this". LOL!!!

I think Disney horse had the right idea. My gelding has black skin there and he often has icky junk there that is black, just like your horse. My horse is a driving horse and I just take a baby wipe and clean him off before I harness him if he happens to be yucky that day. If you don't go around lifting your horses tail very often such as a driving horse, you may not have noticed it. I don't think it is anything to worry about. You have to remember the area you are dealing with.

I would just take a baby wipe and clean it off.

Thats a really clean cabuse, nothing looks irritated, so I would just clean it with warm water no detergents and see if it goes away on its own. Sometimes the more I fuss with things the more they come back . Here in switzerland people cure everything with Chamomile tea, but I would do that only if its irritated . Could it be dried sweat? My dark bay always had white dried sweat between her legs when it was hot , we braided her tail to let in a bit of air , and it helped a lot. When you find out let us know.

I believe that when he passes gas he is possibly also passing some mucus. Depending on his feed, supplements and gut, he may just have more than some others. There is no fever, irritation, etc., so I am for good old "mother nature" issues and just know that he needs a little more attention than another may.
