My 4 week old filly's umbilical stump is still attached. Part of it is dried and part of it seems like a 'hernia'. I would say it is not severe, however, but it is there and she sure doesn't like anything to touch it. Anyone have some info on this type of situation?

Hernias are more common on colts than fillies.

It is helpful when the foal is born and the mare stands up to hold onto the belly area around the cord to support the area when the cord breaks.

At this point I think it is best that your veterinarian look at the site and determine if there is a problem.

Peggy,

I agree with Joanne in that for a filly and at that age maybe you should just have the vet look at it. I don't believe it's an emergency, and I also think it's probably nothing at all to worry about. But just to be safe...especially since it's sensitive to the touch.

Let us know.

Thank you- I am headed to the vet's office today so will ask about it.

Vet checked my girl out this afternoon- no hernia.

Thanks all!
