Here is a link to a photo of Chubby Sam (Thousand Oaks Classy's Shadow) in todays "All Horse Old Fashioned Christmas Parade"- http://community.webshots.com/photo/106794...516412344zaJtNc. The event began 12 years ago when a gentleman, who rode horses, was tired of horses always being in the back of a parade so he created a "horse's only" parade. The staff said this was the largest parade to date w/ over 100 entries of carts/wagons/carriages plus a dozen units of mounted riders. I heard 122 drivers signed up but only 105 made it today. There was every sort of hitch vehicle and every size equine to pull it in the parade!!!

It was veeeeery cold! Maybe 30 degrees w/ a brisk north wind. Sam had never been a parade before, much less a paved city street so on the police escorted drive from the fairgrounds a mile and half over to the old downtown he learned that manhole covers, painted lines on the road, decorated mailboxes, black plastic bags of trash at the curbside, storm drains and barking dogs jumping up against chainlink fences are nothing to worry about.

He is such a sensible guy that people always think I'm the brains behind the operation and I say "No way, it was the folks who trained him to drive that should be thanked!" and that was our own Horsefeathers who post here.

In 2006 we plan to have the second mini driving and ready to do the parade! And next year I'll decorate the cart a bit more. I was selective about what I did not wanting to have too many things that could fall loose or flap against Sam's side and upset him.

Merry Christmas!

What a wonderful Happy picture. You don't have to decorate him, he's already decorated!! Thanks for sharing.

What a nice color scheme to go with that particular horse (the light wood cart and the greenery, that is.) The more carts I see decorated mostly with greenery up the shafts, the more I decide that's what I'm going to do if I ever find a parade to go in. I want to keep it simple and true to the old-fashioned feel of the holiday instead of the glitz and glitter aspect. After all, you show just how classy that looks!

I LOVE that cart (can you tell I am cart shopping???)

You look really happy, not cold at all!!

I think the whole outfit is very tastefully done

Couple things, if your a driving junkie you'll enjoy this link to the newspaper write up on the parade and the gallery of photos. The photographer got bunches and bunches of photos. I met several of the other mini entries as we waited to start and of course, they were wonderful people. In fact, one of the first photos is of a couple driving a team of mini appys, 2 & 3 years old, to a buckboard. I drove over from the fairgrounds to the parade start in front of them. They train minis to drive and the calmness of their young team and the gentlemens quiet manner was a credit to his good work. Here's that link: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2005/dec/04/p...istmas_holidays

As for the shaft greenery, that is stiffer greenery on a wire which was perfect because I could control where it went and keep it off Sam's side so it woud not tickle him. On some of the larger horse's jog carts they decorated their wheels and that looked really neat! I will definitly add big red bows to the cart. Those looked very nice on the carts/wagons yesterday.

The cart is from Pam in New Hamsphire at this link: http://www.ccfdriving.cjb.net/ She knows carts and miniatures and with correct measurements will sell you a cart which fits the mini. Additionally, she is prompt about returning phone calls or emails which is something I value in a supplier. In the photo gallery of the parade the very last photo is of a fairly nearby gentleman I briefly visited with. While he purchased his cart from someone in PA, I can't recall the producer, it was just like mine except that it was the Meadowbrook style. He said his wife's cart was exactly like mine. They are easy to handle though the shafts are fixed shafts and not interchangeable or removeable. My second mini is smaller, 31" tall and of slighter build than Sam so I will order a wooden easy entry cart from Pam later this winter which is built to suit him.

Anyway, thanks for letting me share and babble a bit!

Looks like a really large parade and such neat pictures!

I have a niece with 3 boys living there so hope she was there to cheer them on.

what awesome parade pics........I wish we had a parade like that........we have a parade like that during the week of the 4th of July when we have our annual week long Wagon Train which is 10 days of horse shows, fun shows, dancing, trail rides, and mules shows plus everyone camps there and the dance is every night except Sunday......then at the end of the week we have a parade thru town.........its our 44 yr I believe.........

Thanks for the compliment. You have also done an outstanding job with Sam. I love the way you always think of him first. As I just wrote to you in an email, I think Sam is so lucky to have 'found' youall. Can't wait to see how Pippin does when you start with him!

Wow! I really enjoyed going through those photos. Thanks for posting the link! I wish our town would do something like that!

Oh gee Sheila, your at least half the reason I got "Mini-itus" so bad that I had to own my own after meeting yours when they would come to the clinic!!!!! I've just about thawed out from the weekend only to listen to our forecast for the week and wish I was down in Mexico. Dang it's cold!!!

Jeff is a gem of a veterinarian and all around genuine nice guy and I'm fortunate to work for him.
