My mare was at day 320 I checked her with the test strips got 4 purple within 20 seconds, checked her ph she was at 6.8 so of course right to the foaling stall. The next day she waxed up and was dripping milk, following day same thing, the 3rd day she was waxed up but not dripping milk.I checked her with the milk strips again got 4 purple within 10 seconds-ph was at 6.She was relaxed and red inside for 3-4 days.I did not get any sleep of course waiting on her.Well after about 5 days she is no longer waxing up,she has gotten tight in the backend and her bag is getting smaller so I test her tonight and she is only 1 square purple and her ph is 7.I also bought the softchek strips as I want every answer,4 days ago it was bright orange indicating she would foal within 12 hours-tonight it is a brown color so that to is going backwards instead of forward. What on earth?! She did not have the foal,She was in the stall and in my round pen only so no chance of having it anywhere. She is soooooo fat, could this have been a fasle pregnancy?I just couldnt imagine this as she is so very fat!I should have taken pictures! She was bred in APril of last year-bred only in April and did not come back in.If the foal died inside of her a few days ago she would obviously be sick by now correct?I am calling the vet out tomorrow after seeing the milk test strips tonight.I assumed she was just showing signs of foaling and wanted to torcher me for weeks...lol...but now that the milks strips are lower I just dont know what to think.ANYONE ever experience this?

I had a maiden mare bag up one time, full bag, got tight, waxed. I expected a foal at any time. Waxing stopped, bag softened then disappeared! 2 weeks later bag was back, full and tight. She foaled then.

I recommend having your mare examined by a vet immediately.!!!!! Is she acting in distress.

Two things may have happened.

The foal has been absorbed, (but rather late in gestation) and this is a false pregnancy. I had one do this last year and it was a long story which resulted in a trip to a Large Animal Clinic and some hormone treatments to drain fluid from the body.

or two, the foal is in a twisted position and cannot be born. ( I too had this happen) the vet had to manually open the cervix, and untwist the foal and did manage to get a very distressed filly out. She did live after three days of extensive care!! This requires immediate attention. Good Luck.

Hi there --

Off topic, but did you receive the email i sent you? I was browsing your website and noticed you recently had a filly sired by my stallion Impressive Lights. Congrats

Im sorry Leeana I did not get an email from you? Yes the filly is out of your gorgeous stallion Impressive lights-I just replied to her post...... Now Windy-the mare that is reversing her foaling signs,THE FOAL IS THERE AND VERY MUCH ALIVE,I felt it really kicking lastnight,I was so happy to feel this. Now the question is why did she wax up,drip milk, relax in the backend. If I didnt see for my own eyes the test strips turn purple within seconds and the ph at 6 I would think I was just watching to closely and getting over anxious but this in not the case. She waxed up for 4 days! The test strips indicated foaling within hours and now back to days.Im so confused.Im calling the vet out today-I just hate when he checks my mares-He is so rough. He was checking one of my mares to see if she was in foal a few months ago,He pushed so hard I buckled at the knees and so did the mare-his assistant yanked her tail up and said stand up here! I yelled Stop just Stop I dont have to know if this is what they go through!!!!!!!!! This is the first time I have had a mare checked to see if she was in foal,I dont know if this is what other vets do but Id rather just wait it out to see if they are in foal rather than put them through that.Maybe its the vet-Unfortunately I have had a few vets out here and all of them are just so rough and dont really seem to care.

First, fire your vet! Second, I would observe her closely and just watch for signs of distress and see if she swings back into a pre-foaling pattern again. I've had some reverse patterns for a few days when something changed in their environment, like moving to a foaling stall.

I have a mare doing the same things: showing strong signs of foaling within 24 hours and then nothing. I feel your pain! My advice is if the mare isn't acting in distress (and she would be if she was in labor and unable to deliver the foal) keep waiting. With that said, if she's acting like she's colicing, I would have her checked. We had one here that was "colicing" but it turned out she was having an early seperation of the placeneta and a week later foaled a still born colt.

Thanks thats what I was thinking. She is not acting as if she is in labor at all.Yes the baby moved lastnight,it was so funny.I was up against Windys belly,The baby kicked so I hard I about lost my balance and fell backward.I felt it again- very strong baby!! Yes I honestly hate the vet that comes out-I feel he is so rough. When he was checking my mare to see if she was in foal he was pushing so hard his arm was literally shaking-I thought oh gosh this cant be right?I was so afraid he would hurt her!Thank goodness I stopped him. This is the 3rd vet I have had.If anyone knows of a good veterinarian in the Somerset/Greensburg/Latrobe/Ligonier PA area Id greatly appreciate their # as I just dont know where to turn!I read as much as I can so I learn because the vets sure are not helpful around here

I had two mares ultrasounded and due at the same time. They were stalled side by side. One foaled 2 weeks ago, within hours, the other started bagging up, was going through the signs and then everything just subsided. Their due dates are/were the 1st to 2nd week of April. I am still waiting on the other mare. Baby is strong and kicking, but still on the inside.

It's funny that your question is on this topic.

I had a mare (this is her second foal) whose bag was progressing right along as normal. She would stand in one spot a lot and then sometimes I would see her roll as if she were trying to position the baby or being colicy and not feeling well. This went on for almost 3 weeks! She had little crystalized colostrum on the tips of her nipples (waxing). Tthen I felt her bag one day and it had shrunk in size. The next three days it seemed to shrink more. :DOH! I kept thinking to myself that something must be wrong. In 13 years I have never had this happen. I thought maybe the foal was malpositioned or maybe it was dead. I was thinking of calling the vet. Even if the foal was dead, eventually she would have to go into labor! Well, to make a long story short she FINALLY did foal and it was a text book delivery. She presented me with a beautiful little filly. I am still not sure if it's a palomino or a cremello.

So I would waited it out a bit longer. She will EVENTUALLY foal.

I have been watching a maiden mare for the last 3 weeks do about the same as yours. Foal seems fine. Bag up all hot and full, waxy then nothing. I am trying very hard to just be patient. I think in my gut everything is fine. My mind just wants her to get on with it. I will follow my gut.

I have three large animal vets and I only live 12 miles from you. You know now there is a equine specialist in Somerset, Keith Brown... now that handles equine only situations, but you have to take them to him, he has a very nice facility & lab and has even had out of state equine shipped in for problems.

I never have had any trouble with the three that I deal with having miniatures or shetlands. You can PM me if you need addtional help with some local other vets that I have a listing as well. I think I have at least 6 local ones that are familar with miniatures. I never had a mean vet and if I did, he would be gone like my previous farrier that I had used years ago.

Your Vet sounds terrible, you poor thing! I have seen many horses examined to see if they were in foal ( I used to work on a horse stud) and I've NEVER seen a vet pushing so hard his arm was shaking, that is just hideous!

Good on you for calling a stop to it. I hope you are able to find a new Vet, I'm wishing you the best of luck
