He was a feral kitty gone friendly and he was my buddy. He was born outside to a feral cat, but my kids found him and tamed him and he was a really cool cat, although he didn't want to have anything to do with living indoors. He had an assortment of huts outside and his favorite place was to sit in the sun on our back porch and hang out with the dogs when they went in and out and sometimes he would get under a dog and come right into the house like he was one of the pack. He waited in one bush every night for me to come home from the barn and no matter what the hour, he waited and he gave me the tail high slow walk escort tripping me all the way to the porch. He walked with me for every manure load dump to the field and back again and laid in my stables to watch me clean stalls every day. First thing yesterday morning taking my daughter to school I noticed a cat was hit on the road. It was a bad hit and the hair was ruffled so badly I didn't think it was any of my cats because the color didn't look familiar, so I assumed that it was a drop off cat that didn't know to stay out of the road. We took the cat off the road for a proper burial anyway, but really didn't think it was one of our guys. Even told the kids it wasn't one of ours, thought it was a drop off cat, we have been flooded with dumped cats these past few months....

Our cats were all disturbed recently out of normal pattern when the gang busting team of tree trimmers for PECO went down the road. Only three of my 6 cats checked in last night and my cat lovingly named "chub" wasn't at his place in the bush. My husband and I had a horrible thought about the cat we found on the road... Probably was chubby. Who ever hit the cat just left it right in the middle of the road. I don't understand how somebody can crush somebodys cat and just leave it in the road for your kids to see going to school. So many of our cats are similar in color, so I am still not positive it is my beloved chub. It was a really bad hit. Chub or not, I am terribly bummed about the accident. Cars drive too fast on our road. We havent had a decent rain in so long and the ground is like a cement rock to dig... and I was still trying to dig a deep enough hole for chub at midnight last night after three failed attempts at digging a hole, ugh.... Going out to finish the burial this morning. Poor chub, I couldn't even get him in the ground right away. He was such a cool cat. Wings chub, you didn't deserve that.

update... got him buried in an area he liked to hide in to jump out at me in the dark... my husband came up to help me, hung up the milkers on the cows and came up to the house helped me get the hole big enough. He sure was a big cat, bigger than 4 of my dogs. Rest in peace chub... praying the rest of my guys come home soon. Update, we are pretty sure it is chub... pretty darn sad to have the cat hit so badly that you aren't sure which one it is. Car might have thought they hit a raccoon. He was that color. so is his mom, still waiting for her to check in. take care guys, thanks for letting me cry this out in print.

So sorry for your loss.

On a side note for digging holes in hard ground, if you don't already know, add water to the hole as you go, letting it soak in, then dig out the damp dirt and add more water as needed to dig as deep as you need to. We often have to do this to dig post holes where its really hard (some areas we can't use a tractor driven post-hole digger, so have to dig by hand).

So sorry. Rescued kittens seem to make for great pets. We had one of those cats growing up. Her mother was ferril, she was about eight weeks old and looked like an eatheopean, half starved. She couldn't even hold herself up to eat the first two days. We had that cat for over 20 years, yes 20 years! She was an awesome pet, loved her humans and was a very thankful appreciative pet.

Thanks folks, I didn't think to add water to the hole, duh. my strong farmer husband made it look so much easier. I couldn't even get a shovel dug in to start a hole in the first few places. Finally picked a shady spot and it was a bit easier there, but still had to deal with some roots and rocks. Chub was part of a feral litter. We found homes for all his sisters and brother, his mom still lives here, she is neutered now, still wild, but will rub on your legs when she doesn't think you are looking. Chub was a huge kitten, he ate cat food while the other ones were still nursing from mom, hence the name chub. When nobody wanted to adopt Chub I decided to stop trying to find him a home after my son said.. hmmm, wonder why Chub was left and nobody wanted him, he was the BEST one of all... My son is very sad, but didn't say much, I think he keeps hoping it isn't really Chub. We get tons of drop off cats on our farm here and an occasional litter from the moms I can't get trapped and neutered in time. We love all our kitties, wild and tame. A month ago a car driving by our house and just rolled down the window and tossed out a gorgeous tuxedo kitten black and white. My mother in law adopted him, he was too young and completely clueless about being outside. People can be so heartless, everybody thinks a farm can use "one more cat"... thanks for the kind words , Adair

I'm sorry you lost Chub. I have a soft spot for my kitties so I understand. People can be so cruel. I had a jerk stop in front of my house and throw a beautiful orange and white cat out his window while I was standing there. He took off so fast kicking up stones and dust so i was not able to get his plate # but I did give a discription of him and his truck to the police. Poor cat ran into the woods and cried but would not come near me for a week. Finally it stoped and I thought the worst for him, but come to find out he had made his way down the road and followed some friends of ours while they were walking. They took him in and has a wonderful life now! Do you know the part that just gets my panties in a bunch.... if he just would have asked me I would have taken him, no questions asked!!! What a jerk!!

Sorry again about your little buddy

Thanks everybody, my kids are still in shock but it brought a tear to my eye to hear them tell cute "chub stories" last night. I know they are still hoping it really isn't real and he will show up. Everybody was happy when Chubs mom "do-dah" came home last night. I was relieved to see her, she ran off when the PECO guys were on our road 4 days ago, she was hungry but looked real good. She was chattering up a storm like she was having a conversation of sorts. She and Chub were identical in color and at a distance you couldn't tell one from the other.

Chub was the kind of cat that would jump on your car hood and look in the windshield at you if you didn't get out right away. He liked to sleep in a high spot next to our door so if you went in or out, you could pet him on the head. He waited at the bus stop every morning with the kids. He was a really cool cat. I remember I used to tell people I wasn't a cat person, but somehow, in the rescue of so many dropped and unwanted furballs I can't say I am not a cat person anymore. Wild or tame I look for each face every day and I really get sad when we lose one, but I also get really happy when we are able to save a life too.

My "Pepper" cat has not yet checked in, he is the last one I need to find that got lost during the tree trimming.. I do know he moonlights at the neighbors farm, so hoping for safe travel home for Pepper. Take care guys and thanks for a place to outlet some grief. Adair

update... pepper cat came home last night, that is the last of my cats to check in since the road work. I normally have a small pack of cats following me and for several days, I had an empty porch. Pepper cat has been talking to me non stop and he is glad to be back home.

I am really sorry. Folks who have farms/live in the country need outside cats, they are necessities. Over the years, I have lost 3 great outside kitties....2 to the road (and we live way off a country road) and one that just disappeared...she could of been hit, killed by a coyote or something, or even maybe killed by a hunter. I've given up on having an outside cat....it's just too hard to lose them. Unfortunately now the mice/moles have taken over my property.

Sorry again for the loss of your kitty.

Thanks, if I could house them all I would have no outside cats. Unfortunately for us, we live on a big farm in the middle of a ton of Mc-mansions. The SUVs and sports cars drive too fast, and the clueless folks whose child tired of their kitten, wanted a litter for "the experience" for the children and the people that sneak their trapped feral cats onto our farm. I could go on and on. People drop an average of 20+ cats here per year. I trap neuter release vaccinate all that I can. It is like draining the ocean. We also get dropped dogs, much more now for cats and dogs with the economy in such a rut. Everybody wants to liberate a critter on our farm.. they don't hear them cry, see them hit, or see them try to cope with trying to fit into an established colony. I have 4 that I call pets and three interlopers trying to fit in, and a bunch at our dairy barn... most are neutered, but a few very wild ones I know will drop some kittens this spring and it will start over again. People toss them right out the car window. I feed them because I can't stand seeing their little faces looking in the glass at me and crying. Some won't let you pet them at all. I now have a basset hound thanks to some heartless jerk that tossed him out. He came with a lab that has been since adopted. I must have a sign somewhere that says, all lost critters welcome. LOL. Chub was special, he was born here to a feral cat. She was too far along when I trapped her to spay, so we built a big cat condo on the porch that has a lid and goes the whole length of my porch. It has a lid and I use it to house wayward cats that might need to deliver kittens in a safe place, or for a cat that might need medical treatment. It is a very nice condo. Chub and his brother and sisters were tamed by my kids, vaccinated, neutered and we found homes for three. Chub was cool, but he hated being indoors other than to visit. I found his mom as a kitten sleeping in a birds nest in our bush. She was so tiny but a spitting hissing furball that could move like lightning.... Wish I had gotten her caught sooner, never saw the male cat that wandered in.., the truly wild ones are very hard to get into the trap. I used to catch Chub 5-6 times a week when trying to trap another cat... he would eat all the food and sleep in the trap until I let him out. He was a riot. I have a very wild cat in a crate at my barn right now and another sick kitty that is getting antibiotic treatment for a snotty nose, in a crate at the barn. Thank goodness for our cow herd vet that helps us with our sick barn cats. Most would get too stressed to transport anywhere. The feral cat program forgotten cats has helped me tremendously. take care and thanks all who posted. Adair
