I will retrieve as much info as I can from a variety of emails.........

here is one

From Carl Holder - the update as of Sunday, September 4, 2005 - Thesituation is not desperate and animals are still coming into the

Houston

SPCA as well as a number of other shelters and rescue groups.

The Beaumont area humane society of SE Texas (an independent shelter)

is

loaded and has purchased additional runs to house the many dogs. Many

of the

animals now are going to Baton Rouge and Lafayette shelters. There is a

group that is getting the strays that were abandoned.

There are lots of wild rumors going around. "Shoot to kill" is one of

the

rumors and simply not true. The Baton Rouge local independent shelter

is

still taking animals.

Food is not needed! Many dog and cat food companies are supplying fresh

food

to the shelters that need it. Local people that were not affected by

the

hurricane are coming out in mass to volunteer to help at the shelters.

The Beaumont Texas shelter is NOT adopting animals out because they

know who

the owners are. Those animals that are not identified are not going to

be

adopted out right away either to give owners a chance to reunite with

them.

Many people are coming out daily to visit their pets.

Please, if people or clubs wish to donate, it needs to be money and

given

directly to the shelters. These funds will go for the medical supplies

and

medical treatment of the animals that have been taken in. These are

independent, local shelters that are 501 ©(3) and will give tax

deductible

receipts. The addresses that you can send money donations to are:

Humane Society of SE Texas (Beaumont)

2050 Spindletop Road

Beaumont, TX 77705

Capitol Area Animal Welfare Society

6357 Quinn Drive

Baton Rouge, LA  70817

(addresses of the other local and independent shelters will be posted

later

today)

Permission to cross post to other lists is granted and encouraged

A pet shelter has been opened at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, right next to the
Cajundome.  Evacuees may bring their pets there for housing.  We have

PLENTY of food, water, crates, cages, bedding and newspaper.  BUT the

owners are responsible for feeding, watering, walking and medicating

their own pets.

Interested parties may call Lafayette Parish Animal Control at

337-291-5644 for more information.

Also many area vets are accepting animals right now, until they fill

up.  Get the Yellow Pages out!

Please help me to get this word out.  I've been working non-stop!

THANKS!

OK here is another one hot off the wire I just recieved this request If you want to help here is someone to contact........

Hi,
I have been asked to contact shelters and rescues in the western part of the United States.by Carol Williamson in Texas who is working with the SPCA in Houston.  She's asked me to collect names of shelters and rescues who might be able to take in animals that are victims of Hurricane Katrina.  None of these animals will be moved out for 3-4 months at this point.  They will be up to date with shots and that's all I know at this time.  I didn't ask her a lot of questions last night since I know that they are working hard on rescuing the animals still trapped in Louisiana and the other states.  Texas has taken in 1,000 animals as of last night and they are sending in teams to New Orleans and other places in Louisiana to rescue the animals.  Everything right now is a work in progress with lots of questions and not a lot of answers right now.

Last year the Pacific Northwest took in 58 dogs from Alabama that were hurricane victims.  I'm hoping we can help out by taking more this year as I'm sure there will be more animals that are homeless this year.  Especially with more storms out in the Atlantic forming right now.

If you can help out please send me your name, rescue/shelter name, phone numbers and references including a vet reference and how many dogs or cats you can take.  I'll keep everybody's information in a database and send it to Carol when she asks for it.

I can also do a list for the east coast and send it to Diane Albers in Florida as she is working hard again this year to save the animals.

I am assuming things will go some what like last year.  Mostly large dogs and mixes.  I don't know for sure but I believe that those released will be for adoption rather than being fostered waiting for their owners to reclaim.  Many people won't be able to reclaim their pets as they have no jobs, no house and no way to care for them.

Please keep all the people and animals in your thoughts and prayers.  One other thing.  Carol said that right now they have enough food in Lousiana for all the animals.  Texans came out by the droves to donate food and a lot of the big corporations are donating pallets of food also.

Thanks you so much and please feel free to crosspost.

Thanks for the update but it was never the animals that had been rescued that bothered me, it was the hundreds still in there, slowly starving to death, that did. I wonder if anyone ever bothered to go back for that dog on the roof- it's owner certainly wouldn't. probably got another one by now!! As I said at the beginning, I'd have shot my dogs myself before I left them, and I am sorry the "shoot to kill" order was rescinded (It WAS given) There are animals starving in Waveland and Gulfport- who will rescue them???

OK here is an update link to what is being done.........they are combing new orleans in a grid block by block picking up all animals left behind thousands have already been recovered and are set up in texas along with other areas in temporary shelters..........

to read a very long and indepth update as of last night on the continuing effort to evacuate the animals go here
