I am buying a mare that has been exposed to a 2 yr old stallion.

If in foal.......does the stallion need to be 3 next year before the foal can be registered?

Also,

What about a mare?? Does she need to be 3 before her foal can be registered??

Thanks

Sire and dam must both be 3 (as of Jan. 1st, not their actual 3rd birthday) the year the foal is born in order for that foal to be registered. Sire and/or dam do not have to be brought permanent before the foal can be registered. However, if either sire or dam is not made permanent then the foal must be registered before the end of that parent's 3 year old year.

As per the AMHR rulebook--AMHR horses for which an application for registration has been submitted to the AMHR National Office, will be registered only if the sire and dam do not have expired registration certificates.

So, you'd want to register your foal prior to the end of 2009, since a stallion that is 2 now will have temporary papers that are valid until Dec. 31, 2009.
