Quick question about a mare that just had a baby...

Hi, my mare just had a baby this afternoon, about 1:30pm and she still hasnt pooped yet. should we be concerned? should we do anything or just wait?? thanks in advance!

Congratulations on your new foal! I would not be concerned yet, at this point. I have found it to be quite normal for them to not poop for up to 24 hours later.

I would not be worried. After they foal it can take a while. We give our mares a big bowl of beet pulp, some alfalfa pellets and corn oil with warm water after they foal and for a feeding or two in the next 24 hours. It seems to soften the stools and make it easier for them to poop.

If you have bran at home you can do a bran mash and oil with warm water.
