We had a friend who goes to our miniature horse club. She wondered if when a mare foals and the baby comes out okay but then stops breathing; what would they do? I wasn't sure. We don't have breeding horses but I'm just trying to find out for her.

There was just a long discussion about this on LB this week.

I havent read the entire other thread but we do keep a homemade foal resuscitator

Take a small water bottle and cut off the big end. Cover cut end in tape.

This fits perfectly over the muzzle of a foal so you can blow air in the drinking end and force air into the lungs much more effectively then mouth to mouth

You mean mouth to nose.

We have had to do "mouth to nose" on one occassion and thankfully were succesful.

The vet said to be careful around the mouth so as not to blow slimy gunk back in.

The horse is a nose breather.
