It costs $200 just to walk in the door at the vets here. That is if you can find one that thinks a mini is worth their time. I had a mare that retained her placenta for 6 hours and every vet in town was at the Rodeo. This was only 5.2 miles from my house. Not one of them would come help. Finally one told me to use gentle diaginal downward presure. Then he added be careful because I could cause her to bleed to death. What a vet . HUH?

I've had vets do palpate, internal and external US and never had better than 50% accuracy. Most recent is a horse specialist that was absolutely sure one mare was open. Also very sure one was bred. Both wrong.

I've had mares that will show full heat one week from foaling.

I wait for the foal to arrive. not a matter of $$$ but experience.

I would have checked "accuracy", but it wasn't an option.

You need a better vet :p I've only had one vet ever get it wrong... he missed twins (even after 14 seperate ultrasounds) and one pregnancy (mare aborted 60 days after he diagnosed her as open). Other than that, never had a problem.

Thanks for all the comments and participation. This is an interesting topic to me as this is the first yaer to have my own stallion. What I've been doing is the pmsg which I can pull and send to the lab easily since I work for a vet, who unfortunatley doesn't have a u/s and just sees cats and dogs. She still helps me out as much as she can. Last U/S I had done cost me $70 plus a exam fee and having to haul the mares to the vest, so.... I'm going to try the feeling for the foals too, that's a great idea. My boss used to confirm mares in foal by finding stethoscope cking for fetal heartbeats. It's really interesting what has worked for everyone. My 2 mares haven't come back into heat so I am crossing my fingers... the one hasn't taken for a couple of years but I am wondering it's b/c she's only ever been covered for one cycle. Thanks again

Internal (rectal) ultrasounds.

Knowing when they are due is sooo worth it!

Also love seeing the little critters
