I have been watching my mare closely the pass few days because I believe she is really close to foaling. I have noticed that the past 2 days in the early afternoon she is REALLY restless and uncomfortable. Lots of belly kicking, tail swishing, yawning and pacing. Could this be an indication that she will foal around that time? Or does it work that way? She seems pretty settled through the night.

Not in my experience. I find when I put my mares in the foaling barn at night after they have been outside, that the foal starts moving about the time the mare is resting and having her dinner. I think when the mare is active she is rocking the baby to sleep, but when she stops the foal becomes active and starts moving around.

They also do more movement as they get close to foaling to get into position, then seem to settle in and wait for the final push.

Oh darn. I was hoping that meant increased chance of an afternoon baby. :DOH!

I'll just keep watching her round the clock and hoping for healthy then.
