I for one think this is wrong, there are soooo many things wrong with this. there are minis going to the slaughter houses, i dont think they need any more publicity, there are too many of them out there that are forgotten about and uncared for. and FAO schwartz is NOT educating people on how to properly take care of an ANIMAL!! BUT this is MY opinion. please no flames. anyway i wrote to peta b/c i think this is wrong, and this is the response i got. you might want to help me contact the ceo. i called the "personal shopper" at FAO and they said the one of the "higher-ups" would call me back, but no one has. its been about 3 days. here's the letter from PETA, they wrote me right back. THEY RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY. what other LIVE animal can you purchase this way? notice they arent selling and dogs cats or fish, like most people can handle owning.

dont you wonder where they are obtaining these minis? when i called they could NOT tell me the age, sex or where these minis are coming from. and what happens when the foal isnt buckskin??? is this the publicity you want for the miniature horse world??!?!! :

Dear Sarah,

Thank you for calling and emailing us with your concerns about FAO

Schwartz. We share your concerns about the harm that will be caused by this

policy. I have passed this information along to the appropriate person

in order to determine if we can take any action against the company.

I would strongly urge you to contact the CEO of FAO Schwartz and

express your outrage at their decision to do this. It's horrible enough that

horses are bought and sold by breeders and dealers, but to be selling

them alongside toy houses and cars to be bought by anybody with enough

dispensable income is unconscionable.

Take a look at our "Stop the Pet Trade" Pack to learn more about those

who peddle animals in the pet trade industry:

We thank you for your obvious compassion. Please know that billions of

animals-whose capacity to feel pain, fear, and stress is equal to that

of "companion" animals-are cruelly confined and slaughtered annually.

To prevent untold suffering, go vegetarian! It's easy:

I understand what you mean, but I wouldn't have contacted PETA. To me, they go way over board with things..

PETA doesn't want you owning horses either ......or any other animal for that matter.........I'd run from them fast......

You got that right

Those would people would be the Last to be contacted if even on something like this....

Dont get me started on my opinion of PETA anyhow......

to all these people who this is ridiculous, dont complain every time you see a mini go for slaughter, or a 100lb person riding a mini. it would be a wonderful thing if FAO schwartz was saving minis from the slaughter and then placing them in good homes, but I doubt thats what they are doing.

They sent an expert to make sure the buyer knows how to care for the horse. What more did you want?

I am sure that store has been hit also with the slow down in the ecomony and this was One mini horse of which has alreadt been sold and this was just an advertising gimmic for that store like other have done in the past no foul play no errors and it stated in the ad after sold it was to be Your pony is escorted home by a specialist who is there to offer complete information on caring for a new horse. And it also states this Owing to the size and nature of these ponies (under 36 inches and used solely as pets), they should be considered domestic animals rather than farm animals. The pony comes complete with current health papers stating which vaccinations were given. The pony will need a small outdoor area with protection from the elements and enough room for daily exercise. That said it is a Pet and Not a toy...And besides what is the difference between this sold in this catalog? A sales Catalog, or a on line acution? None that I can see.

That's not what PETA is doing either. Haven't you heard they "rescue" animals and then EUTHANIZE them without even making any attempt to find a home for them??? They think all animals are better off dead than being someone's beloved pet.

While we seem to be stuck with PETA forever, I doubt that FAO Schwartz is going into big time business selling minis. Just how many do you think they can sell???? Most people are smart enough to buy from a breeder. I may not agree with the ad, but they seem to at least be making an effort to educate the new owner.

You got a response, you requested, from an organization that has an interest to ONLY give you the response you got.

There just is not much more to say about that.

Tommy

Well, you noticed that they had to add "breeders" in there, didn't you? Without breeders there would not be any. That is a group that I think might have started out with good intentions, but I think they use their organization to complain about anything they can.

Fran

I can't stand PETA, so I couldn't care less about their response. And in answer to your question about seeing other animals sold like this, I do remember a time when SharPei's were 'new' here, and (I believe it was) Nieman Marcus had one in their catalog.

Most of the people I know here have rescued many minis and other animals,,including me, without the help of PETA.

We can't control the world, all we can do is make a difference one step/animal at a time.

Have you rescued animals? Have you made a difference?

The only thing PETA does is terrorizes anyone owning animals, including the many 10's of thousands of good caring folks, that don't need to be harassed or have their animals, "Freed", stolen or killed because PETA doesn't want anyone to own any animals.

The only thing you started, is putting a bee in PETA's ear, so they can end up hurting someone. The only thing PETA does, is destroy, kill, maime, hurt, Harass, lie, make up pictures if they can't find what they want, that shows their views.

If PETA gets ahold of that mini, the only thing they will do to free it from Humans, and to make sure no Human ever has joy in it, is to KILL it.

If you gave any personal info to PETA and they know you have animals, don't be suprised if you find our animals gone one day, freed from your abuse of just owning them.

I may sound very harsh, but having been on the recieiving end of those monsters, and knowing very good people that have had their animals hurt or killed by them..

You may of opened up a can oh worms you never imagined!

i understand your concern but PETA is a mistake. I would not go to them with anything.

I think your concern was genuine. Good for you!! Perhaps, according to other posts, you may have not picked the best organization to get involved in the situation, but you did something. I applaud you for your action and appreciate your concern.

Quite frankly I was amazed that everybody said they thought you did the wrong thing. When I opened this thread I thought everybody would be jumping on the bandwagon. Hopefully it's just because they dislike PETA so much.

PETA must be one of the ugliest things around and the last place that should be made aware of any animal in distress or not. And anyone that would tell you that it's horrible enough that horses are bought and sold by breeders and dealers, that should tell you something and who cares what the rest of the sentence was.

l would be afraid if they were in my face for the animals sake not mine.

How stupid and un-informed of all of you. Surely you realise that a mini sold for that kind of money in a toy shop will only promote us sending horses to slaughter, as we will all have no money left over....
rolleyes.gif
Kerist.

Yes who ever you are, your concern is, um, well, nice and all. However PETA, as others have said is just a plain stupid place to go with this. Your name is something Farms yes? Then I am deducing that you probably breed minis, yes? Well let PETA get a-hold of you for that one my friend, Because, taking the logic a step further, you probably sell your minis to pet homes... Well you my friend, accoriding to PETA policy are abusing animals. Yup, they would LOVE to come to your house, snatch up your 'kids' and go 'drop 'em' so that they will not be used for your greedy profit.

Soooo If PETA is your baliwick, I suggest you stop breeding, don't Ever buy from one of us breeders, and maybe put your horses down as well, as that is what THEY DO!

As others mentioned, this (FAO pony) was done in a responsible manner, someone quoted the sale catalogues exact words, saying that someone would come and help and teach them. This is no different then any kind of advertising that we do here... Do you advertise your horses? Well, this would be along those same lines. Just because it is a big corporate company, please do not assume that they are doing it all wrong or abusing that pony. JMO and feel free to flame.

Shari - "Have you rescued animals? Have you made a difference?"

YES! i have rescued a miniature horse. it was my very first horse. i rescued him when he was 20, and yes he only did live 2 years but MANY people have told me that those were the best 2 years of his life. Have YOU made a difference????? let's see your rescued horses.

Appylover2 - thank you so much
aktion033.gif
for not being afraid to get flamed by others on the board and taking your OWN stance against this. Thank you so much. At least IIII contated someone. what else did you all do? Thank you for your support.

Spotted Pony Girl -"How stupid and un-informed of all of you" wow - that's a really MATURE thing of you to say. my name is winchester farms, yes, but you can check witht he registries...i own ONE mini mare, and i will NOT breed her. im NOT in the business to breed at all, not to make money, just to do SOMETHING BESIDES BREED these animals. i have never bred in my life and am against just breeding for "pets".

shminifancier - "Your pony is escorted home by a specialist " all of you are so dependant on this "specialist" but let me ask you a question.... is this the same specialist that listed the add for a "miniature PONY"???? yes, clearly they specialize in miniature horses......

i am only voicing my opinion -III am not calling anyone stupid or un-informed. Like i said in my first post, please do not flame me. I am only responding how i felt necessary and if others felt the way i did. if they did then good! i am not one to sit back and let things flow. i DO try to make a difference.

who do you think i should have contacted instead of peta? someone realiable. at least PETA DID SOMETHING and tried to "make a difference".

AGAIN thank you appylover2!!!! at least you an I must have the same kind of understanding. wish i could give you a hug!!!
