Interesting day at work yesterday to say the least. I work downtown Ottawa for the Government of Canada - Health Canada, Consumer Product Safety.... Went out yesterday for our break and the next thing you know there are 4 paramedic vehicles, 7 police cruisers, 3 fire engines, etc. etc. Absolute pandemonium. Seems the Conservation Party Headquarters in the building next to our received a severed foot in the mail

. What?????? Then later in the day they found a severed hand at the main post office here in Ottawa. I feel for the person who received that "foot" and opened the package, I probably would have passed out. Now they are trying to figure out where these packages are coming from, they think from Montreal.

In the past we have received suspicious packages and the bomb squad are called but never have I ever heard of severed body parts being received.

Update:

Two human body parts mailed to Ottawa — a left foot sent to the Conservative Party of Canada headquarters and a left hand found at a Canada Post terminal — came from Montreal and have "some link" to the discovery of a torso in the Quebec city, police confirmed today.

Both body parts mailed to Ottawa were sent from a fake Montreal address, Ottawa police say, and Montreal police will now lead the investigation into the hand and foot.

The hand and foot will also undergo testing at a Toronto forensics laboratory but could now be moved to Montreal, police say. The torso, which police said is from a Caucasian man's body, is undergoing tests in Montreal.

RCMP in Montreal are set to reveal more information about a suspect in the torso case. Police also said that suspect knew the victim whose torso was found.

'Never forget' horrible odour

The left foot was discovered Tuesday after Ottawa police were called to the Conservative Party of Canada headquarters at 130 Albert St.

A party spokesman told CBC News the package was brought to Prime Minister Stephen Harper's campaign manager Jenni Byrne. She examined the package after it was opened, he said, but called police when she saw the blood and smelled the odour.

"Conservative Party staff are very upset and disturbed by what happened yesterday. It was such a horrible odour I'm sure many of us will never forget it," said Fred DeLorey, director of communications for the party.

The hazardous materials unit was called in and the coroner soon confirmed the package contained a human foot that was somewhat decomposed.

While investigating the foot, police found a second body part in a package at a Canada Post terminal at Riverside and Alta Vista drives in south Ottawa.

Major Crimes Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt said the foot was delivered through Canada Post and conceded it is possible it was sent as a "gruesome message".

The foot was decomposing, Pirt added, but he would not say whether the foot belonged to a male or female.

Public safety minister reacts

The grisly discoveries in Ottawa and Montreal continued to garner reaction on Parliament Hill Wednesday as questions surround the circumstances of the body parts.

"It's certainly an unusual development and it's not even insofar as homicides go. It's quite an unusual circumstance," said Public Safety Minister Vic Toews.

Liberal MP Justin Trudeau also commented by saying "there's someone sick out there." He also said constituents in his Montreal riding of Papineau are worried about their safety.

Ottawa police have added there could be more body parts in the mail but it is unlikely they are in Ottawa.

OTTAWA — Montreal police have identified a suspect wanted in connection with the discovery of a man's torso in a suitcase in Montreal — linked to a severed hand and foot which were mailed to Ottawa — as Luka Rocco Magnotta.

 

Magnotta is not in custody, police say.

 

A man by the same name is a gay porn star, featured on a number of lurid Internet sites.

 

Two bloody packages mailed to Ottawa — a foot delivered to the Conservative Party of Canada headquarters and a hand intercepted by police at a Canada Post terminal — were sent from Montreal.

 

"The suspect and victim knew each other," Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere told reporters Wednesday. "It isn't linked to organized crime."

 

A man's torso was discovered in a suitcase in a Montreal alley Tuesday morning shortly before a senior Tory staffer in Ottawa partially opened a brown-papered package, which was later found to contain a severed left foot. Police tracked a second package to the Ottawa Postal Terminal and stopped its delivery later Tuesday night.

 

An autopsy is expected to reveal how the man was killed and whether he was dead before being dismembered, police said. Police have not released the victim's name.

 

The autopsy will be performed in the coming days but so far "all indications are that these are from the same body," a communications agent for Montreal police told the Montreal Gazette Wednesday morning, citing a preliminary report. "We are still waiting for final results." She spoke on condition her name wouldn't be published.

 

Ottawa police are no longer commenting on the case and have turned the investigation over to their counterparts in Montreal.

 

There police focused their attention on a second floor apartment in a building in an area near where the torso was found Tuesday in a suitcase on the curb with a pile of garbage.

 

The tenant of the building is being sought by police, said residents of the building.

 

Some people who live in the building also said police believe the torso belongs to an Asian man who is apparently missing. The police have been showing a photo of the Asian man on Wednesday.

 

Residents described Magnotta as a very quiet man who kept to himself. The building's superintendent joked about it. "It's like you see in the movies. It's always the good neighbour. It's the cliche," he said.

 

Residents of the building said they believe Magnotta worked in the gay porn industry.

 

Magnotta has blue eyes, black hair and also goes by the names Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov.

 

Sites like www.Luka-Magnotta.net also contain numerous screeds that decry the Internet rumour mill inflicting damage on his reputation.

 

"Many hoax websites are created using my image and name, posing as me to seem more believable in respect to the type of audience these website have, I feel I don't need to list them specifically but people need not be told, not to believe what they read and to take it as fact," he write in one article entitled "Cyber Stalking" beside a photo of him shirtless and reclining.

 

In an article on another site purporting to be an interview with Magnotta he complains about "lies" linking him romantically or even married to schoolgirl killer Karla Homolka, who was released without conditions in 2005.

 

The first package was generically addressed to the office of the Conservative Party of Canada on Albert Street in Ottawa, just blocks from Parliament Hill. There was no note inside the box. Police have not said where the second package containing the bloody hand was destined, but confirmed it was not to a residential address.

 

Police knew the second package was mailed from the same source and tracked it with the help of Canada Post investigators.

 

The receptionist at the Conservative Party office thought the package, which was a bit bigger than a shoebox, looked suspicious, said Fred DeLorey, director of political operations.

 

It was taken to the office of Jenni Byrne, director of the party's 2011 election campaign, who saw blood inside the box and smelled "a very foul odour," DeLorey said. Police were called immediately.

 

DeLorey said the party is assessing how it handles incoming mail in the future.

 

Ian Anderson, head of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers local for Ottawa, said it's possible that police used the bar codes on the package sent to the Conservative Party to locate the other package found at the Alta Vista sorting facility.

 

Canada Post packages are affixed with a machine-readable code used to trace its progress through the mail system. While the code would not given the sender's address, it could pinpoint the postal station from which it was sent.

 

A database search on Canada Post's computers could locate other packages sent from the same station at around the same time, and would provide the package's approximate location at that moment.

Gross! Sounds like the head has NOT shown up yet? There was an episode similar on one of the crime tv shows. A head was the last part found and it was in a refrigerator.

Some years ago I had been on assignment at some of the military bases in Germany. The bulk of my stay was at town called Fulda. I had only been back in the states a short time when the story broke about a soldier at Fulda cutting off the head of man he believed to be having an affair with his wife. The wife was in the hospital and he took the head there and set it up on the nightstand at her bedside. The rest of the body was found at a telephone booth. Crime of passion to the max.

Updates on the news just now suggest that this suspect has possible past ties to Karla Homolka. It's also said that he has a history of torturing kittens--apparently videos of this torture have been posted on the internet. It's also said that this suspect has stated there would be 6 body parts mailed out. Someone--and I forget whose statement this is, it was repeated by Robert Fife on CTV news at 11--said something to the effect that this is not a political statement--it is the work of a madman.

I hope they can get it figured out and find the killer before he kills again.

Riverrose, I agree with you. Sounds like in that situation the perp was brainless and heartless.

One of the more recent crimes in our area was a 30 something year old mom, her 8 year old son, and her 11 year old daughter with their throats slit and their house set on fire with them in it. Initially no suspects and the two different dads of the children not only had to go through the suffering of their loss but each of course was a potential suspect. Both cleared. No suspects left and people were simply terrified. Then a person comes forward and confesses to the 3 murders. It was a 16 year old girl.

Well more and more details are coming out about this individual. I can' t call him human.... I can't wrap my head around all the perverted and sick things he has done. There is an article by The Sun newspaper in England that gives a window into this individual's lack of soul. He truly is "evil" incarnate. Back in December 2011 when he was in England he, after being stopped by a reporter of the newspaper and questionned about his part of the animal cruelty he put on you tube, sent a follow-up email to the paper. It was pretty telling of what he was going to do and did in Montreal last week. He apparently also left a note for the police saying there are another 4 body parts in the mail!

On a local message board I am on a couple if the posters said they have watched the online video of the murder--it is actually posted on line and shows the victim alive, being stabbed and then being dismembered. They say they watched out of curiosity. I guess I am not that curious because I have not tried to find it.
