I have been feeding purina strategy for years now, before that I was feeding omolene 200 to my ponies, but when i tried the strategy it worked better. Over the past couple months I have found that the strategy just smells AWEFUL and the pellet seems to break down into powder faster. It doesnt have the same feel, taste and smell to it as back when I started feeding it. It seems like when the bag changed from paper to the plastic like bag, the feed changed too (Im not sure why?). I wrote Purina and told them this too.

So, just a couple weeks ago I started everyone back on the omolene 200...it looked just like it use to, then i opened a back last night and it appears to have alfafla pellets (or something) in the grain? To me, this isn't a bad thing....I'm just curious if anyone else has this too? Or if its been that way for a while and I've just been out of the loop since i've not been feeding it for a couple years?

This is why I switched from Purina. It seems like their feed changes every year so then I went to find something that had a locked formula. I've now gone to Purina's new mini feed and I really like it but I hope they don't change anything to it.

It will be interesting to hear what replies you get.

Im just wondering if this was a mess up bag or what, its very odd, if I had other bags here I would open them up and look but this was the last bag i put in the feed bin. Im just wondering if anyone else has this or what?

It just appears to be an alfalfa pellet, im not sure if it is..

I feed the purina mini feed also and really like it but this is the only one i really tried. I kept my minis on it cuz thats what there orignial owners had them on

I recently switched to the Purina Miniature Horse & Pony feed and am really impressed. I was feeding Omolene 200 (did not notice any Alfalfa Pellets when I was feeding it though) previous to the change to the mini feed. I really like the Mini Feed though and I "hope" that nothing about it changes!...

Good luck finding a new feed that you and your horses like!

I have fed Strategy for about 17 years. I have not noticed any change in the feed. But I have recently changed to the new mini feed and love it. I did leave my mares that have foals , on the strategy. I will wait till after weaning to switch those mares.

I have not noticed any changes with my strategy either-or my omelene 300. I am contemplating switching to the new mini and pony feed since everyone on here has had nothing but good things to say about it. Just hate making changes when my horses are doing well already.

Can you take a photo of it in your hand so we can see what you're seeing?

I use Omolene 300 for my hardkeeper. I've never had a bag of the 200 so I'm not sure how different they are, if at all.

I'm in the same boat. The only horse that I'd consider switching won't eat it. So, I have a 50lb bag of food I really can't use. If the information I've read is correct, I'd have to feed MORE of the new feed than I am of Strategy. That's more $$ just on that basis alone, along with being either $1 or $2 more a bag from my supplier. All of my girls on Strategy are doing really well on it (lovely, shiny coats with great manes, tails and hooves too) so it's not like I need to switch for that reason.

It is nice though that so many are seeing great things in their own horses from it.

I just bought some Omolene 200 about 2 months ago, and they had changed to the new bag, but the feed looks the same. There are little pellets in there, but they are brown I thought. Is it these pellets you are questioning??

I will have to take a photo of it in the morning and post it....

Its not the little pellet that is always been in it, like all sweet feeds have, this is for sure an alfalfa pellet as I tasted it...will take a photo in the AM...I did a google search and found no one else asked about it, so I have NO idea right now and just find it strange.

Will post a photo in the morning.......

Hey Guys I know this is not really about Strategy but I felt I should post anyway. If you are using it then please check each of your bags carefully!! They have at least one bad batch out there. The smell is different and even the color is somewhat off as well (lighter than normal). If the batch is from May check it especially carefully!! I told the manger at my feed store that my friend had gotten several bags that seemed bad. He opened up a new bag in front of me and sure enough it was bad. REALLY BAD! Hers did not look quite that bad but 4 of her horses kept getting colicky and was looking for a reason... BTW this was the original strategy. I know they have a newer version now. Not sure if there are problems with that one or not. Yes Purina does know. In fact I think I will do an internet search and see what info I can find.

I would say that definitely any feed that is 2 months old or more in this hot summer weather we have been having should be looked over carefully. Feed is not very stable and can go rancid quite easily depending on how it is stored and the temperature outside.

I would be interested in seeing the Omolene 300 picture. I used to be an equine specialist for Purina Mills. I do know that at times there can be some variation in the color of the pellets due to ingredients and the cooling process they go through after cooking the pellets. Typically they are cooled with outside ambient air and sometimes the difference in temperature/humidity can affect color. Any issues, problems or questions should be reported immediately to the company to get the answers you are looking for. If you are concerned just take a sample with the pellet to your store and have them send it in to the plant.
