so tell me i know it was said theyshouldnt get alfalfa or grain...

so what do you feed or just some grass hay?

how does there care differ from horses?

I heard someone say that riding and such isnt good for them? it can ruin them not that i have any intentions of riding a donkey lol but wondering is driving the same thing (again no intentions of doing that either) just want to be educated a bit so i know what i am getting into and when the right donkey comes along i can give it the care it needs

I have my mini jack trained to drive. These creatures are designed to work and LOVE to work. Kilroy will drive all day long.

We know have a riding donkey. He is 20 yrs old and trained to ride, drive and pack. He is more than willing to do any of the 3. Lots of people ride donkeys. They are "beasts of burdens". Not sure where you heard it ruins them to ride them but I don't see that. Mary rode one to Bethlehem...........

If they are big enough you can ride them. Some really like people and enjoy it,, and some don't. You want to look for a people friendly Donkey.

They are super easy keepers,, so do not need the rich feed. Vitamins and some kind of grass hay, normally just does fine for them.

Here is a great web site about Donkeys and Mules..

I have always really wanted a Poitou,, but they are so rare, have no idea if there are any in this country. Have been shopping for a smalled riding Gaited mule or Donkey with the training and miles I need. Tell you something,, they sell very, very fast!!

Here is a link to a good Donkey and Mule trainer, who also has classifieds..

Both my Jennies were riding Donks. Their idea of 'riding' and the girls that rode them's idea was quite different, however. When they'd gone far enough they dumped the girls and came home honking and bucking!! Girls learned to compromise very, very quickly. Molly was very willing but Lucy would NOT cross water!! As we lived on a river this limited where she would go. When I finally sold her her new little owner (who also lived on a river!!) spent a year letting her make up her own mind. Once she had she would actually splash through it happily. On their own terms seems to be the key, and in their own time.
