New little filly - Suggestions welcome!

. I joined here a while back but life got in the way and I haven't been on lately. The other day I bought a little Mini filly who needed a home. Unlike my other "Minis", she is actually Mini sized. She is very tiny! She is clearly very wormy, and pretty skinny under her fuzzyness. I de-wormed her the morning after I got her. She has all the hay she can eat and whatever grass is left. A friend suggested some feeds and supplements to me, as well as Ulcer-gard which I am going to do. Any other suggestions are welcome, but I just wanted to share a couple pictures as well. She is a yearling, they think she was born in August 2012. She is VERY sweet!! She needs a name too!

She has the softest eyes, what a darling. Congratulations! Suggestions - I would try to be sure to give her plenty of protein in her diet, that should help with her belly as well as being sure she is kept as worm free as possible. Like Rabbitsfizz says, what did you worm her with and at what weight. Most horses who are allowed to carry a heavy worm burden will need a follow up worming 2 or 3 weeks after the initial dose to be sure you have actually gotten most of her parasites.

Awwwww! She looks fairly young? Some of her issue may be lack of nutrition. I would add some good Junior feed to her daily ration. I feed the Purina Equine Jr and have had excellent luck with that, fed with their alfalfa hay. Minis require a bit more protein than the bigger counterparts. Sounds like she is in good hands now!

She's just such a pretty girl! I would also suggest you add a high protein grain to her diet, with alfalfa hay or pellets, to increase her protein level. That will help with the little bloated tummy, and the alfalfa will soothe her tummy during the transition.

The Junior feed that Laurie suggested is great, but make sure you give her a full ration so she gets the benefits of the vitamins and minerals. I would suggest several small meals a day to get her started, making sure she quietly eats her food and doesn't 'wolf' it down -- which would irritate her tummy.

Thanks everyone! This is two days post de-worming (it was Anthelcide which was all I had on hand...getting to town this week though so I can pick up whatever else you think I should give her). The weight tape said 118 pounds so I did a little less than 100 pounds because I didn't want to overload her right away.

wingnut - You mentioned silver bay, do you think this filly is that color as well? I originally thought she was chestnut until I really cleaned her up and then noticed that she has a very greyish look to her, especially on her legs and face. I took some new pics after I cleaned her up. This is two days post de-worming and a lot less like a drowned rat lol.
